A THE EVENING STAR, SUNVOLK” THEDRY OFFERED I REPORT View That Center Is Heavy| Mass of Gas May Solve ‘ Puzzie of Energy. ‘ BY THOMAS R. HENRY. ‘The sun is something like a mon- strous egg, with a yolk in its center. This “yolk,” according to the picture presented in the a report of the Smithsonian Institution issued this week, is & heavy, concentrated mass of white-hot gas—a star within a star The temperature within this yolk runs somewhere in the neighbornood cf 29,000,000 degrees above absolute zero. The density is about 28 times that of water. The yolk is composed of some of the ordinary elements found on earth, but stripped of some of their outer electrons by the intense heat, so the resulting gas is very heavy. It is a state of matter entirely outside human experience. May Solve Old Problem. anced concept of the vide a solut ‘This recently adv sun’s interfor may e of the earth's t to the process anuous for at least 0,000 ye 2,000,01 the minimum age allowed for the sun on the assump- tion that it gave birta to the earth in its early youth. Yet the geat star doesn’t seem to be geiting cooler. Theoretically it is losing rate of about 4,200,000 ton This would give it a lease its present rate of 15,000,000,000,000 years Source of Energy Mystery. Nobody to answer, to everybody where the enormous T came from the burning of the sun, like heat from a coal fire star long ago would have been b out. Some have assumed the p in the interior of some unknown active element heavier than uranium. But, Dr. St. John points out, it has been calculated by British astronomers that conditions such as obtain within | the “yolk” of the sun are such as would make easily possible the transformation | of matter and the production of heat by the atomic energy released as a result of this process. This view was | open to serious mathematical objections when the sin was considered as a body with a light outer atmosphere gradually increasing in heat and density toward the center. The long jump from the hot “yolk” of the sun to the dress and underwear of the modern girl is bridged in an article in the report by Dr. J. W. Sturmer of the Philadelphia College of | Pharmacy, who discusses the effect of the sun’s ultra-violet rays on the hu- | man organism. They may be both a | source of health and & danger, he points out | The textiles most transparent to these | rays, Dr. Sturmer says, are the loosely woven rayons such as now are used ex- tensively in the clothing of women. Silk | dresses, on the other hand, shut out much of the ultra-violet, which may come originally from the “yolk.” | Masculine Progress Limited. “Feminine dress of tod: he de- clares,” is in far closer harmony with the newer facts pertaining to irradi- ation as a health measure than is the modern attire of the male. Women have gone far since Civil War days in 80 changing the fashions as to provide | for plenty of sun irradiation. Men have made- progress merely to the extent 0(“ shaving off their whiskers and exposing thelr chins. ““Most clothing effectively intercepts ultra-violet radiation. Animal hair is quite opaque to Only very white hair transmits it slight extent. All woolen clothing is an effective ultra- violet filter and the modern male promenading on the board walk receives | practically no such irradiation through | his clothing.” Dr. Sturmer provides an explanation for the f et alleged debilitating effect Ultra-violet rays n, he points g ozone, a gas W ng effect on the hu- man system. Produced in Upper Strata. This is produced most abundantly in the upper layers of the atmosphere, | before the short rays from the sun can | be cut off. When the wind is from the ‘ | west or the southwest more of the ozone is brought near the surface where it can get into the lungs. The rare gas | i8 likely to be absent in an east wind. Artificial ultra-violet radiation pro- Huced by lamps, he warns, contains wave lengths shorter than those in sun- light which has been filtered through the atmosphere, and hence there is greater danger of severe burns, unless the operator knows hi I ger of burns from lessened by having s terial over the skin. ] invisible to v i of the face pa is mildly fluo tle protection crean and signed to prevent su Ship your Christmas packages by the safe, sure way—Ra 2 Agency. | Advert lway Expre Hygienie Towels and Toilet Tissues World's Oldest and Largest Manufacturer of Interfolded Products How Modern Women Lose Pounds of Fat Swiftly—Safely Gain Physical Vigor— Youthfulness Here’s the recipe that banishes fat and brings into blossom all the nat- ural attractiveness that every wom- an_possesses Every morning take one-half tea- spoonful of Kruschen Salts in a gla: of hot water before breakfast—cut out pastry and fatty meats—go light on potatoes, butter cream and sugar —in 3 weeks get on the scales and note how many pounds of fat have vanished.
