Killed Two Is Sentenced to 18 Months. Special Dispatch to The Star. ROCKVILLE, Md., December 8—Law- rence McCullough, 22, of Washington, formerly of Bethesda, this county, who was last veek found guilty of man- slaughter by a jury in the Circuit Court jury of Ludwell Lee, 21, of Bethesda, in an " automobile accident on the Rock- ville pike, near Grosvenor's lane, the morning of May 17 last, was yesterday afternoon sentenced by Judge Robert B. Peter to 18 months in the Maryland House of Correction. Sentence was passed after Judge Peter had overruled a motion for & new trial, which was asked on the theory that the verdict was against the weight of the evidence and that the court erred in admitting testimony damaging to the defendant Judge Peter stated that he had re-| ceived letters from the parents of both Lee and Calvin Brown, 18-year-old resident of Bethesds, who also was killed in the accident, and from the Washington Railway & Electric Co. by which McCulfough had been employed for several years, asking that sentence be suspended. He said, however, that he could nct agree to do that, although he had been led to understand that the boy had always borne & good Tep- utation and that his predicament was the result of not exercising his usual care in selection of associates. Judge Peter stated that he could nct agree with most criminologists and sociol- ogists relative to the efficacy of sus- pended sentences and declared it to be his judgment that fear of punishment is the best crime deterrent. The sccident which resulted in the death of the two youths occurred at & very early hour in the morning and was due to the automobile, Which McOullough was driving, leaving the pike and crashing into & telephone pole. Lee died soon after reaching & Washington hospital, Brown was killed_instantly, McCullough sustained a broken arm and other injuries and Cecil Baker, Bethesda youth, who was also in the car, escaped without being serjously hurt. chants’ Division of War-Time Food in her home here Sunday.
