Science Mountain Canyons Yield Virulent Plant Poison, De- scribed in United States Bulletin as Flitweed. A new virulent plant poison, the flitweed, is described in the Experiment Station Record of the Department of Agriculture. It is found in shaded mountain car- yons of the notaern Sierra Nevada and is greatly relisned by both cattle and sheep. First t poisoned animal be- gins to breath more rapidly, then loscs all sense of direction, staggers and falis to the ground in convulsions. It bites almost incessancly at objects on the ground, chewing at sticks and dirt or anything else vithin range. Thea breathing and reart action grow slower | until the animal coilapses and dies. A poison of the strychnine family has been found in the plant. About five pounds of the raw plant will kil a| sheep. There i+ no remedy, once the poison begins to take effect. T. R. H.
