DIVA SAYS SHE WED, BUT CLERK DENIES IT Hilda Burke and Belgian Baritone | Maintain They Married in West New York, N. J. By the Associated Press. WEST NEW YORK, N. J, October 14—The marital status of Hilda Burke, Chicago Opera Co. soprano, and Desire Defrere, Belgian baritone, remains a | jig-saw puzzle of denials and assertions. | In Baltimore the couple said they were married in West New York, N. J., last Thursday after failing to obtain a license in New York and Newark, N. J. But the license, maintained Assistant Town Clerk Harry Swensen, is still in his office here. Rev. John Lehnert, who was said by the singer’s muther to have performed the ceremony, denied he married the couple. But he added: “Call me up in two weeks and I'll tell you.” Then he bung up. Mrs. Walter J. Hopkins, the prima donna’s mother, said in Baltimore she “knew” her daughter and the baritone were married by Mr. Lehnert, because she said, she was there with her hus- band as witness. To cap it all, a Willlam Murphy, who signed the license as a witness, could not be found at the address he gave. Jewish Christian Bible Conference Hears Dr. J. 8. Conning. Dr. J. 5.
