NEW YORK, September 19.—Heavy -mn‘ hit the curb market today, push- ing active shares to further new lows. There was little or no recovery at the lose. Utilities were rather badly battered, Electric Bond & Share losing 2 points net. There was a similar decline in American Gas & Electric, while Con- solidated Gas of Baltimore dropped 4. American Superpower, Associated Gas “A,” American Commonwealths “A” and United Light “A” were also weak, losing up to a point or more. Cities Service, which had been hold- ing at 8, reacted fractionally, c! % l‘;rsnetlouor 3. Gulf Ol ylelded s mummum of America went under 100 for the first time of the current decline, and ended the day 4 points Tower, ‘Woolworth, Ltd, weakened about a point and. was_ off lppmxlmntely a point net. Mead Johnson, Be- ment Pond, Ford, Ltd., and Gmt At~ Iantic & Pacific were other heavy spe- cialties. ‘The market oDened heavy, as over- nl?h& selling orders were executed. Prices steadied somewhat when this liquidation had been completed, only to turn downward in the late trading. The volume was large. There is un- doubtedly much hoarding of currency— bank notes and gold. This bankers de- cry. The decline in the average of stock rnces in the first three weeks of Sep- ember has exceeded their average loss in any full month of the past year. In the industrials it has amounted 24 points, orl'lpercent'!nnflltn 14 points, or 21 per cent, and in public utilities to 11 polnfa or about 20 per cent. Extending the comparison to the prices of this date in 1929, .wuhn average declines in the three groups stocks of 266, 135 and 98 polntl. u spactively, or a 70 per cent shrinkage in each case. GERMAN ECONOMIC STATUS DECLARED BETTER THAN IN 24 ‘(Continued Prom First Page.) $30.34 seven years ago, in spite of the T shares ot to Harpen Mining e at $7.32, against $113.65 in 1924; while those of Phoenix Iron & Steel are selling at $4.72, as compared with $48.70 seven years ago. Incidentally, the earnings of Phoenix from 1930- 1931 were equivalent to more than 27 per cent of the present market value n( the entire capital stock. The shares Mannesmann Tube are selling at l'l 91, against $55.33 in 1924. Many financial men are quite confi- dent that history will repeat itself and that those who are willing to speculate on & rehabilitation of the world, will trlumph in the end. It is merely nec- essary to nve the signal. Seven years ago, it was the League of Nations, which gave the signal. Who will take the leadership today? The answer must be given within lhc next 60 days. It may come sooner. CORPORATION REPORTS —_— TRENDS AND PROSPECTS OF LEADING ORGANIZATIONS.
