Va., September 2. —Chlef of Police C. A. Duckworth sald today that Mrs. Luella Powers, 45, wife of the man held here in connection with the killing of two women and three children, told him this morning she was | “through with Harry Powers—I wouldn't \hl\e him turned loose for a hundred { million dollars.” | Duckworth said the woran gave him ia -caliber pistol, she said her hus- | band always kept in the house. | Shortly after Powers was arrested last Thursday the woman embraced her hus- band, asserted she believed he was in- nocent of the killings. Duckworth said she told him today “she was confident from the evidence gathered to date that he betrayed us both,” referring to herself and sister, Miss Eva Belle Strother. “Death Code” Found. A “death coce” by which Powers re- corded the progress of his correspond- ence with women throughout the coun- 'try was discovered today by detectives investigating ramifications of the kill- ings of two women and three children. Letters ard post cards he received in response to his lure cf wealth and | affection were found to be marked, ap- parently, for filing. A fragment of an envelope gave an_apparent key to one of the markings. The mark was “P-15." It bore the notation, “Graveyard. Euch s meyhing was found on letbers from the two women he confessed he killed, Mrs. D. P. Lempke of Worcester, Mass., and Mrs. Asta Eicher, Chicago, whose three children also were slain. City Detective Carl Southern said he belleved “P-15" indicated those corre- spondents Powers had marked for death. Information that Powers had been seen with Stamatifos Sfikas, 44, Clarks- burg shoe shine parlor owner, shortly before Sfikas disappeared in June, speeded _investigation of that affair, just as discovery of a trunk, containing several firearms and 50 photographs of women, gave further impetus to search for other possible victims of the 42- vear-old former salesman. The quest spread to Miller, S. Dak., Vanalia, Tl | and Mansficld, Ohio, where he was be- lieved to have lived as “Joseph | Gildeau” about the year 1924. Commercialism Reappears. Commercialism reappeared with the erection of a high board fence about the garage where Powers, he admitted, | killed the five victims. PROBE DETROIT SOCIETY. Attorney General Promiiss Early Steps to Close Club. Powers made the acquaintance of two women whom | he killed in Clarksburg. W. Va., Assist- ant Attorney General Joseph A. Gillis | today begen an investigation of the American Friendship Society. ‘The inquiry was ordered yesterday by Gov. Wilber M. Brucker in Lansing and Gillis left at once for Detroit to confer today with Prosecutot Harry S. Toy of Wayne County and United States postal authorities. Regardless of the outcome of those conferences, Gillis said, he in- tends to institute quo warranto proceed- ings as socn as possible to have the society’s activities stopped, as opposed | to the public good. | ‘The Friendship Society was incor- porated by Albert B. Plater and his wife, Olga, “not for prot.” Powers became a member under the alias “Cornelius O. Pierson,” and engaged in ardent cor- respondence with women in many cities. In announcing the investigation, Gov. Brucker said the five murders con-| fessed by Powers, whom he termed a | “modern bluebeard,” had “shocked the public conscience.” He sald that “any | agency which encourages hasty and ill- | advised marriages or aids parties t,o‘ enter into the marriage relationship for a mercenary or illegal considera- tion, strikes at the very foundation of human soclety and is a menace to the | community.” | He instructed the attorney general to take immediate steps to stop opera- atfon of the society if it is found to be an illegal enterprise, LEFT FOR IOWA TO MARRY.
