SP ORTS. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTORN., D. C.. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER ’ 1931, S 9 =3 SPORTS. C-3 George Washington Expects to Have Better Foot Ball Team Than Last Season BULK OF MATERIAL OF 1S3 AVLABLE Gridders Gather at End of Week to Open Toil at Camp Letts Monday. BY IL C. BYRD. ¢ E'LL nct have as good a team as everybody thought we’d have last | year, but we'll have a better team than we actually had | last year,” is the rather nzive way in which Head Coach John Pixlee| gives his view of foot ball pros-| pects at George Washington for| the coming season. And what Pixlee says probably hits the nail| on the head just about as square- | ly as anything could, because| there’s not the least doubt that people expacted more of the Co-| lonials than they were able to de- | liver, and, to go just a kit further.| it certainly is ‘only reasonable to suppose that, with the bulk of last year’s material again on hand, the team ought to be stronger than it was then. | Pixlee does not talk a good deal about his work, and seldom does l'\el give out much in the way of opinions. In all that he says he is conservative, | and his statement that “we’ll have a better team than we actually had last really means that Geoige Wash- have some right to | optimistic, becaus after all, George Washington in 1930 was far from weak. True, the Colonials did not measure up to the heights for them by overenthusiastic students and alumni, but they did piay good foot ball and turned in several good gimes, though the big end of the score w on the wrer e by a small margi What Georg Washington peop! may look for this year, apparently, is a team that should give its foes a battle | all the way, no matter what the re- X And that, in the last | nstitutes a good foot ball | the time has gone when any | am may walk rough-shod through its | schedule. here are too many good teams everywhere for that. EORCE WASHINGTON'S squad is | to gather here next Saturday and | v. and on Monday will leave ts, where it will again go training period. Coach s to spend between two | in_the preliminary | e he brings the squad | Yack to Washington. Camp Letts is | the same place the squad trained last Fall, and is run during the Summer by the Y. M. C. A. for its boys' department. | Coach Pixlee is busy with his aides manbing out plans for the season and | in ‘arranging details for the training camp stay. And. incidentally, there arc | plenty of details to be arranged. from being sure of correct sizes of shoes for feet of all shapes and sizes to det mining what mornings teak will be served instead of allowing the young | men to work out with no more solid bedrock than scrambled eggs and bacon. George Washington has a good break at the beginning of its schedule, in that it does not have a heavy game that might force the training period more rapidly than is desired. The opener with Shenandoah College Scptember 26 is sure to be a set-up, and the sacond with Elon College is not likely to be much more difficult. However, on Oc- tober 16 the team will have to meet a strong foe in Tulsa University, which plays a night game here. Tulsa| whipped Grorge Washington last year &t Tulsa, Okla., by a small marg n. | All in all, it scems that George Wash- ington’s followers have more to look forward to this year than last, although they probably are not so optimistic. s no reason for them to expect to clean up the earth, and it is far from fair to Coach Pixlee for them to cxpect that. As Tom Mills said in| talking of his Georgetown squ man can build a beitcr or b than he has mortar and lumber to bui b with, UTCH BERGMAN got out the C olic University squad yesiorda; two workouis. Ther2 wasn't a whole lot of real work on the program, but the players were put through a long series of drills to develop them gen- erally. Today Bargman plans to to get them down to real work, the long series of pain: 50 necessary. to brng about mechanical proficiency in the type of foot ball he teaches. Incidentally, Bergman is planning an innovation as far as coaching of loczl | teams is conceined in that ha is going | to introduce siow movies in his de- | velopment of the squad. Lest Spring, | while Metzger, the all-American Not:e | Dame guard of last year, was helping | coach the C. U. squad in’ Spring prac- tice, Bergman bought a motion picture outfit and took s'ow movies of guard play as demonstrated by Metzgor; and there is ot the least doubt about the | value of such in:truction. One showing | of the reel that Bargman has should convince anybody of that. Bergman | also has slow movics of George VIk cemonstrating end play, just as val- | uable in helping him teach his ends as the movies of Metzger's guard work in that department. Incidentally, th» | ute of slow movies in scouting would be invaluable, and it is not ta be wondered that many schools that | can well rd financially en_outlay | for that purposs aveil themselves of the possibilities therein. | quad began' its | v et Rehoboih | e and Gray | ead of coming | ach Mills left ing to meot nd yesterday ctice. actice during _the n will be just about year, lcng ‘and coa- to build up the mechenical proficiency so absolutely necessary to gridiron succes-, Mills plans to keep the Georgetown squad at camp for taree wecks.
