CRUISER BOMBING T0 TEST ORDNANCE U.S. S. Pittsburgh to Be Used_ by Navy in Measuring Explosive Forces. The second-line cruiser U. 6. 8. Pittsburgh, now at the Norfolk, Va.| Navy Yard, will be utilized, in a series of bombings in Chesapeake Bay in sbout two weeks to determine the efi- clency of ordnance material from air- craft. The Navy Department vesterday vealed that the Pittsburgh will be rea o leave the Norfolk yard about Septe ber 15 and will be towed to Tangier Sound and moored there. The tests will begin a few days later. There will be no public demonstration of the bombings, the department said, and there will be no effort made to'sink the vessel. Tnvites Army Observers. Becretary Adams has invited the War DNepartment to send observers to wit- ness these tests. Rear Admiral Willam D. Harold Smith, Manu- facturer, Awarded $1,000 for ‘Best Suggestion.’ | By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 2.—C. Har- old Smith, New York manufacturer, who in 1929 asked the public’s advice on how to dispose of $10,000,000 for | the greatest good to humanity, is dead in London. The winner of the $1,000 prize for | the best suggestion was Prof. Henry E. Garrett of Columbia University, who proposed the establishment of a mental hyglene institute for the sclentific study of juvenile crime. Untll Mr. Smith’s will is probated, it will not be known whether he fol- lowed the suggestion of the prise winner. Mr. Smith was 72. He went on & business trip and was stricken with a heart attack. His wife, a son and a daughter survive. He was a native of London, lived for a mEe in New Zealand and came to New York when 15.
