LONDON COMPARES CRIMES WITH 1. § Byng’s Report Is Comforting to City Despite Increase of 2,880 Offenses. By Radio to The Btar. LONDON, August 15.—While the pa- | pers and readers thereof in this coun- try have been waxing indignant over the Wickersham Commission re?orts on crime and police, the same circles herce this week are taking some comfort from the annual report of the commissioner of the metropolitan—London area lice for 1930, despite a substantial crease of crime in that year in this dis trict as compared with 1929. The num- | ber of indictable dffenses in London | last year was 20,553, which is 2,880 more than the lous year. Discussing crimes of violence, the re- | port shows that the murders of persons | more than a year old in 1930 numbered 21, which is° 11 more than in 1929, which was an unusually low year, but the yearly average for the last 20 years. As usual, London police, following the | motto of the Canadian mounties, “got | their man,” except in one case, which is still unsolved. In 9 out of 21 cases; the murderers committed suicide, and | of 10 arrests in the ing 11 cases of the accused persons (one of whom committed a double murder) were found insane, which in this coun- try means they are sent to a criminal Junatic asylum for life. The other three | were acquitted, including two who were | survivors of suicide pacts. | There were eight cases of the murder | of infants under a year old, which is| slightly below the average, though twice as t in 1929, There were 41 cases of manslaughter. This is four more than in the previous year, and au- tomobile accidents accounted for most of them. What the report terms “crime rty”—burglarly, house- King &nd shopbreaking—accounted for a considerable part of the increase in idictable crimes. The figures for burglarly were 352, as compared with 262 in 1929; housebreaking, 2,865, as compared with reaking and :nlfll = red with 1,539. Bo far as h(;'l:se robberies is concerned, Lord Byng's report partly passes the | buck to the public, saying, “Much more could be done by the public to protect themselves. The number of cases in which entry can be made without use ol any tool and in which once gntry is made there is absolute freedom to roam about the premises is far too large.” ‘There is one increase, hmvgl.ms-pmncmotcflmnx- ose involving . “The pragtice of the courts during mmnvewm{&m,"‘mm‘gn- ble increase 4n the number of cases reported.” There were 48 in 1930, compared with 20 in the previous year, and the is thrice the average of the 12 years. 1In contrast to the Wickersham report on the tie-up between police and crooks, Byng’s It expresses ction with the morals of the London police. “Dis- cipline has been well maintained,” says the report, “and the general conduct of the men has been very good, though the number of punishments awarded ‘were mostly for such offenses as neg- lect to patrol boats, exceeding the period allowed for refreshments and absence from sectional houses without leave, shows an increase. On the other hand, the number of cases dealt with by the discipline boards (the more seri- ous breaches of discipline) continues to in Seven men were dismissed 1930, ‘compared with 24 the previous year. The traders. ©Of this number, six so far have been found guilty and have been dismissed, emaining 15 increase prosecu previous vear, figure being 2 ‘which is an increase of 766 over 1929. t, N Still Going Strong With Amazing Bargains Store-Wide Shoe Sale At the Family Shoe Store Save as Much as Tonf Susuva¥ S...R, I TO BE BRIDE NEXT MONTH I MISS ANNE YOUNG GRIFFIN, ‘Whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bryan Griffin, announce her engagement to Ensign Lynne Cline Quiggle, U.
