Orders Slow. | By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, July 11—Although a bettor sentiment is reported in the stecl trace, the market itself remains dull and output c-ntinued to taper off in | the past week, with ingot production now placed at about 33 per cent of capacity. Mill cu:tailment has left in- ventories at a low point and the trade is raid to exvect that e full pick-up in bu-iness would have a fovorab'e reflec- tion in orders b> ked. Nemand js well sustained for structural sh-pes, but buying by the automobile and rail in- dustries remains inaciive. A further advance wes reported In scrap during the week and the pri~e undertone was generally steady. While some improve- ment in demand for pig iren has cecur- red sectionally, buying elsswhere is dull, with prices unchanged. Copper buying was at a minimum until the close of the week, when large producers reduced list orices ', of 1 cent to the basis of 8 cents for elec- trolytic delivered in the -Connecticut Valley. Metal had been previously available at that level through custm smelters, and the premium producers had asked for export copper restricted foreign buying until the price cut brought in an increased demand. Tin declined during the greater part’ of the week, owing to indifference of buyers, but rallied partially at ‘he clese fellowing announcement that Siam * agreed t) adopt the international tin ajicta scheme on a basis of a yearly allotment of 10,000 tons. Lead holds sieady, and although buying is restricted to carload lots, steady shipments against heavy buying in June takes care of smelters’ output and offerings are not pressed Recent advances in zinz prices failed to stimulate demand and the marke. “|eased cn increased offerings. BY JOHN P. BOUGHAN. Ascocicted Press Market Editor. CHICAGO, July 11.—Notwithstand- ing President Hoover's denunciation ol‘ short selling and despite supplementary | statements from Federal Farm Board | sources, wheat fell to new low-price records today. The market closed at all deliveries in Chicago dropping be- low any level heretofore since 1894 and | Liverpool down to & new low level. | Mainly wheat selling in Chicago con- | sisted of hedging against country pur- chases, & process that more than counterbalanced the limited buying power in evidence. Arrivals of new wheat from Illinois points resulted in sales enlarging the amount stored by | elevators already cramped for room. No material improvement of export business was announced, although some Canadian wheat was taken for overseas, as well as quantities of domestic old | and new crop wheat. Corn and oats| followed wheat. Provisions were neglected. WHEAT — High Low Commodity Price Trends of Week BY H. N. MCGILL, Editor McGill Commodity Service, AUBURNDALE, Mass., July 11 (®). —Commodity prices declined last week in epite of the final acceptance by the nations involved of the moratorium of intergovernmental war debts and reparations. Out of 14 groups, eight declined, three remained the same, and only three were higher. It has come to be realized that the benefit of the moratorium at this time chiefly in changing sentiment. Gradually, however, tangible results will be noted from the moratorium. Credit will be available in sufficient quantities to those countries in ‘need to instill activity into industry and commerce. Banking conditions in Germany and other countries will also be improved and ths way will be paved for the better distribution of gold ‘among the various countries. All Commodities. Noting specific changes in the in- dividual groups, the average for all commodities declined to a point about equal to the average before the Hoover oposal was announced. The decline was due to lower quotations in agri- | culture, live stock, industrial, building materials, fuels, non-ferrous metals, textiles. Industrial Prices. Service charges by banks, measured in equitable keeping with the individ- ual activity of a customer's account, is the subject of a book on commer- cial bank management issued by the | Bank Management Commission of the American Bankers' Association. In a foreword, Frank W. Simmonds. deputy maneger of the association, brings out the urgent necessity for banks to give greater attention to operating details in view of dwindling margins of profit caused by increased expenses of doing business while income has remained stationary. “The steadily dwindling margin of profit in banking has brought urgent need for greater efficiency,” he says. “While expenses have increased, large- 1y a result of concessions to customers under the stimulation of competition, income from loanable funds has re- mained stationary. Future gains in bank income must be derived from | heretofore little tapped sources, while established revenues are conserved by the elimination of waste and loss. The reception afforded by the public to the increasing use of tke service charge on checking accounts clearly indicates the willingness of bank customers to meet reasonable demands, and their confidence in institutions that seek | a sound basis for operations. “Essential but unprofitable services rendered by American banks levy an annual cost of approximately $300,- 000,000 against bank earnings.” .
