C—10 = LETCHLDREN READ TRASH SAYSPHELPS Yale English Professor Urges Literary Habit Before Librarians. By the Associated Press. NEW HAVEN, Conn, June 25.— Prof. William Lyoa Phelps of Yale Uni- versity told the fifty-third annual conference of the American Library As- sociation here that the reading of *‘cheap trash” by children should not be discouraged, for books of that nature opened the gateway to the garden of literature. Speaking to more than 3,500 librarians from throughout the United States, Prof. Phelps said, “I have scen many librarians worried because boys and girls take out cheap and ridiculous melo- atic stories, but it is a great deal better for them to read trash than not read anything. Boys and girls who never reod ot all may never acquire the habit.” f. Phelps told the librarians that Gene Tunney, retired heavyweight champion of the world, read Shake- speare’s “Winter’s Tale” 10 times before he ever understood it. “And I admire him for reading it so many times, too,” he said. Miss C. R. Barnett, librarian of the United States Department of Agricul- ture, Washington, was elected honorary chairman of the agricultural libraries scction of the American Librarian As- sociztion Miss Elsie D. Hands, librarian of the| Agricultural and Mechanical College, | Stillwater, Okla., was named chairman and Miss Jessie M. Allen, librarian of the Bureau of Plant Industry, Washing- ton, secretary.
