Assoclated Press Stafl Writer, TULSA, Okla, June 25.—Signs of improvement were noted today in the condition of the petroleum industry, causing a general belief in this oil capi- tal that the industry finally has passed the crisis in the most serious iliness of its history. Higher gasoline prices, predictions of an impending hike in the crude oil : | market and indications of more orderly | if development of the rich Eastern Texas area, a sore spot for many weeks, were some of the heartening developments. Among leaders of the industry a defi- nite feeling exists that the oil business has reached the turning point and is beginning an upward trend. However, thers is no tendency to forecast any spectacular recovery. ‘W. G. Skelly, pres Oil Co., said- he be] ident of the ved the in Skelly i stock. m Paid fornia retail market. The general ad- vance has been 1 cent a gallon. June 25-—Bonds moved sharply higher again today in active trading. consideration of the 10?“'1'! situation in the light of France's reply to President Hoover's debt plan brought out a heavy volume of buying in bonds, reflecting a broad advance in stocks both here and abroad. Everything in the bond list advanced, with the exozption of a handful of high- grade low yield issues. tendency to cash United States Governments, mu- nicipal bonds and the gilt-edged cor- porate descriptions was more in evi- dence than previously this week. Atchi- son general 4s, for instance, which have been selling well above par, whers they yielded less than 4 per cent to maturity, ipped to a shade above 99. There was a similar trend in American Telephone 5%s and 5s, Baltimore & Ohio first 4s, Great Northern 7s, Philadelphia Co. 5, Norfolk & Western first 4s, New York Central 4Y,s and National Dairy Prod- ucts 5Y,s. ‘This was even more significant evi- dence of the trend toward junior se- curities than the sharp gains in second and third grade bonds. Alleghany Cor- poration 5s, whose position has been vastly improved by the rise in stocks deposited as securing collateral, ad- vanced 1 to 3 points. Gains of & point or more were the rule in Erie 5s, Mis- souri-Pacific 5s, Frisco 4l.s, St. Paul :ll};!untmems, St. Paul 55 and Wabash S. number of corporations was reflected in an improved tone in industrials. Ac- companying statements that the divi- dends were being paid out of reserves, because of the markéd improvement in the internationai situation, placed em- phasis on industry’s approval of Presi- dent Hoover's move. Sharp advances were made by Dcdge Brothers 6s, Good- year 5s, Hudson Coal 5s, International Match 5s, International Paper 5s and 6s, McKesson & Robbins 5}5s, Para- mount-Famous 6s. Phillips Petroleum 5%s and United States Rubber 5s. ‘While the expected granting of a $100,000,000 credit to the Reichsbank bv an international group, including the | Pederal Reserve, probably was a big influence on foreign dollar bonds today, an even more direct factor was the world-wide firming of commodity prices. With both wool and wheat— her chief exports—showing firmer lev- els, Australia’s bonds jumped 2 to 5 points. The important gains were in Brisbane 5s, New South Wales 5s, Syd- rey 5'%s and Australian government 4'is and 5s. The much better tone in coffee and rubber was reflected by gains of 1 to State 7s of 1940—the much public! coffee loan of a year ago—were 2 points higher and selling over 80 for the first time, since March. Firmness fh wheat and new record export shipments of that commodity from Argentine sent the entire group of Argentine 6s above §5 for the first time since their break in April. German bonds were up fractionally on & heavy turnover. Probably the rea- son why the recovery in Young plan 5'5s has been so slow is the failure of many investors to realize that the pro- posed debt holiday in no way affects interest payments on these bonds and other commercialized loans of Germany. German municipals and industrials also continued to move upward, notably United Steel Works 6'2s of various ma- turities. CHICAGO, June 25.—Importance of bility of the United States was em- phasized fn a bulletin rel=ased today by the American Research Foundation, showing that the automobile industry is the largest consumer of at least six important comraodities. y “Not only is the automobile industry the largest consumer of six basic com- modities, but in four of these com- modities it consumes more than half th: annual production,” the bulletin pointed out. “Automobiles consume 85 per cent of all the gasoline produced in the United States, 82.6 per cent of all the rubber, 68.7 per cent of all the plate glass, 53 per cent of all the malle- able iron, 30 per cent of all the nickel, and 26 per cent of all the lead—and even in the case of nickel and lead no other single industry consumes so much. “Although it may not bs surprising to know that the great oil and refining companies are largely dependent upon automobiles for the tremendous success which they have achieved in the past decade, it may not be generally realized that automobiles actually consumed 14,130,000,000 gallons of the 16,613, 520,000 gallons of gasoline produced last year in the United States. Neither is it generally known that 495,000,000 gal- lons of lubricating oil were used last year to keep Amcrican automobiles in proper operating condition.” % RUBBER TIRE PRICES TO W I WE §0% | W1l & Co 18t 63 0% | WisCen gn 4s 36. 561 Yokofma 8 i 85 | the automobile to ihe industrial sta= | BE INCREASED SOON DAYTON, Ohio, June 25 (#).—John A.
