“INORTALS VST BELGAN ACADENY Tradition Broken for Partici- pation in Anniversary Cere- monies in Brussels. PARIS (N.AN.A).—The other day, for the first time in the history of the Academie Francaise, the “Immor- tals” set out in a body, resplendent in their green uniforms, to take part in a number of official ceremonies in Brussels. They were the guests of the Belgian Academy, at whose home ih the Chateau de Marimont they were entertained. The Relgian Royal Academy of French Language and Literature is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its founding, and began its festivities in a most auspicious manner by getting the Immortals to break with age-long tradition and leave their home on the banks of the Seine to come a-visiting collectively. Some of the older and more _conservative members are still waggthg their heads about it. French Academy Car. But this is not all. The French Academy is to have a new car. The old landau which has been in service ever since it paid its first visit to the Elysee in 1879 made its last official appearance when it bore thither the newly elected members. M. Andre Chaumeix and M. Le Goffic. The coach is to be replaced by an up-to-date limousine, which might well have borne M. Chaumeix, for like that sign of the times and tribute to the all-conquering speed, he 1s himself a break with tradition. M. Chaumeix, for 30 years chief leader, writer and political” director of the Journal Des Debats, elected to the seat rendered vacant by the death of M. Clemenceau, was the first journalist to be accorded the highest literary honcr in France for his journalistic work alone. The academy thus gave his journal- ism the authoritative hall mark of literature. ‘The age of speed is having its way with the academy’s great jobs, too. Ever since its foundation in 1635 the academy has been engaged upon the dictionary. The first eaition did not appear until 1694, the seventh came out in 1878 and last month saw the green paper wrapper of the first volume-| of the eighth almost disappearing beneath appropriate ceremonial speeches. Volumes Available in 1934, But the two volumes of this complete edition are to be available in 1934, and the 40 great gentlemen are now tack- ling the early letters of the alphabet for the ninth edition. The grammar, moreover, is expected by the end of this menth or early in July, for its proofs are already being considered. Richelieu, it will be remembered, wanted the academy to “Rediger un dictionnaire, une rhetorique, une po- etique et une grammaire,” and until our own day the dictionary had been the only one of these works to be un- dertaken, fcr all the Thursday after- noons that the members have been call- ing their “meetings for work” since the days of Louis XII. STOCKHOLM (#).—In the Artillery Museum of Stockholm there is an ancient burning mirror of large dimen- sions, formerly used by the Swedish army as a means of defense against hostile ships. The mirror was placed in the sun so its reflection set fire to the vessels approaching Sweden’s shore. A scientific adaption of the burning mirror has been made by two Swedish sclentists, who constructed a powerful melting furnace, using an elliptical mirror and a strong electric arc light. During a demonstration of the fur- nace before the Society of Physical Re- search the inventors obtained heat enough to melt a metal with the melt- ing point of about 2,100 degrees centi- grade. Maligin will touch at Franz Josef Land, where the northernmost radio station of the world has been established, visit the larger Arctic area of Nova Zem- bla and return after a cruise of some seven or eight weeks. Passengers who wish to hunt polar bears will be assisted by Northern hunt- ers, who will form part of a crew ex- perienced in Arctic navigation. The icebreaker will have a doctor on board and a short-wave radio station. Fa- cilities will be provided for the collec- tion of Arctic plants. Perhaps the greatest attraction about the voyage is the fact that it will take place in perpetual light, since the Arc- tic sun does not set during the Sum- mer months. The trip is advertised as a particularly healthy one, too, by In- :?url.s!, the Soviet state tourist organiza- on. It has been designed by Prof. Tessenow and is being constructed in the Alte Wache. The monument consists of a stone chamber 1lit by a circular skylight and furnished solely by a single block of black marble standing in the center. The impressive dignity of the memo- rial will add to the city a note of solem- nity and will comment reproachfully on the decorative stones of the last cen- vehicles, says a ukase of the city gov- | tury. ernment. ‘The cause is not the “Red” implica- tion, but the fact that red is the color of all the urgent public services, such as fire, ambulance and mail. PARIS (N.AN.A).~—The trip to Cor- sica from Nice has been reduced from eight to five hours, all in daylight, by the new luxury steamers on the service. It is becoming increasingly popular to run over to island for a few days, and a modern hotel has been built at Ile Rousse. The magnates of the French rail- way companies, who met to discuss the shortening of the trip to Corsica from all points, have been staying at Ile Rousse in such distinguished company as that of the Prince and Princess Gaewan de Bourbon-Parme, Count and Countess Vittori Marcello, Count and Countess Dampierre, Sir Alexander Montgomery, Count and ~Countess Grammont and M. and Mme.
