It you remeraber the heat last Sum- mer, you probably will agree with W. J. Humphreys of the Weather Bureau that the flood of cold air usually flow- ing over the United States from polar regions got sidetracked. It’s his latest theory that this was one of the causes of the 1930 drought. Humphreys just completed a study of world weather conditions for last year, and found the cold currents picked a path over the Atlantic, east ef Green- land, and swept Europe. Very few took the preferred avcnues down the Mac- kenzie River in Canada and the Mis- sissippi Valley in the United States. ‘That accounts for much of the stag- nation of air, he says, which was the cause of the drought. Rainfall is caused by rapid cooling of a largs quantity of warm, moist air. | Usually this occurs from the interaction of cool and warm air currents, the warm flowing up over the cold or, in other cases, the heavier, cool current forcing its way under the lighter, warm cur- ||| rent, elevating it and causing it to cool. t Generally speaking, there is a con- THEORYADVANEED THE EVENING"STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, THURSDAY, JUNE 25 Dime Design Held U. S. Fascist Gain In Letters to Mint Treasury Explains Fasces and Roman God Used ' Before Mussolini. Somebody has started a fantastic story to the effect that the use of the fasces and the Roman god of commerce, Mercury, on Uncle Sam’s 10-cent plece means that the Italian Fascist rove- ment is geining headway in the United States. Scores of letters on the sub- the | jeqp are being received by, the director of the mint from all parts of the country. Officials of the Treasury Department explained today that the design of the 10-cent plece was adopted 15 years ago, before anybody in America had ever heard of Fascism or suspected that the fasces appearing on the reverse side of the dime would be the emblem of the controlling force in Italy. The design was executed by Adolph Weinman, now sculptor of the Fine Arts Commission. (Copyright, 1931) .
