PASTOR FOR PRISON | | FORMERLY OF D. C. Rev. Petsr J. Miner Begins Duty in World’s Smallest | and Oddest Parish. ! I\ Epecial Dispatch te The Star. NEW ORLEANS, La., June 25.—Rev. Peter J. Miner, for flve years nsslsun' chaplain in the National Reform Schocl and several additional years a resident | ©f the National Capital, today took o\'er; his duties as pastor of the smallest and | most picturesque parish in all the world. He became pastor of the parish | within the historic Orleans Plrlshl Prison. Its boundaries are concrete | walls and windows of steel; its parish- | oners pickpockets, burglars, bandits and | murderers. Father Miner's predecessor, | Father J. J. Helinski, has walked to the | gallows with 21 men within the last 10 vears. Father Miner has never wit- nessed a hanging. His first task in his | new post is the preparation of a half- cdozen convicted murderers for their “last mile” to the gallows in the attic of the prison. “I have no statement to make,” smiled Father Miner. “My one desire is that God Almighty shall be ! my sole audience.” i Heart of Catholic Belt. New Orleans is in the heart of the go-called Roman_ Cathclic belt of, Louisiana, and Father Miner finds within his tiny parish a completely equipped chapel, with draperies hiding the iron bars at the windows and with vhe]solt candlelight mellowing the stone * walls. The altar is a beautiful plece of ‘handiwork, and fresh flowers are kept in the chapel 365 days in the year. H on the third floor of the grim prison Father Miner has his living quaricrs and study. r Miner is broaa-shouldered and at. ic an1 has One hard- urth time for burglary, summed it up thus: “He looks like you could tell him your troubles and he'd understand. He looks like an honest-to-God guy, and I'm for him.” Holy Cross Student Here. Peter J. Miner was born in Pennsyl- vonia, attended Notre Dame as an undergraduate and graduated there. He studied in Washington at Holy Cross College. While pursuing his theological | ctudies he often went to the National Training School for Boys to act as an c:sistant to the priests conducting serv- ises there. He wcs ordained in the priesthood here in 1920 and remained in Washington until 1927, when he went to Portland, Oreg., as an instruc- tor in Columbia College. For seven vears he was att.ched to the foreign mission work of the congregation of the Holy Cross {n Washington. From Portland Father Miner went to New Orleans. CIVIC GROUPS UNITE IN FOURTH FESTIVAL Five Organizations to Take Part| in Independence Day March and Program. ee— Plans for a joint Fourth of July cele. | bration for five local citizens’ organiza- | tions were dscussed last night at the| regular meeting of the Rhode Island Avenue Citizens' Association, meeting in the Sherwood Presbyterian Church, Twenty-second street and Rhode Is- land avenue. The fete will be arranged by com- mittees from the Burroughs, Michigan Park, Dalgren Terrace, Brookland Indl Rhode Island associations, and will in- ! clude & parade on the morning of the Fourth, and an extensive program of sntertainment at Taft Park in the after- noon. The parade, which will consist | of & motor vehicle and float division and a pedestrian section, will follow a route passing through some part of the territory of each association represented. More than 1,000 persons are expected to participate in the day's activities. The Rhode Is'and 2scociation last night resolved to suspend meetings dur- ing July and August. Included in the routine business was an announcement that the fire engine house to be con- structed at Rhode Island avenue and Brentwood road will be completed this ear, as funds are now available for he work.
