SHIFT OF TRACKS " TOBEGIN TUESDAY Workmen Will Excavate to . Rearrange Layout in .. Capitol Plaza. ‘Rearrangement of the layout of street car tracks between the Capitol and Union Station, planned as a feature of the enlarging of the Capitol grounds, will start Tuesday, whep woskmen be- | g:n excavating on First otreev northeast tween B street and the depot for one of the new routes. It is expected that the work of laying 41l of the new trackage will be com- pleted about August 15, and the re- moval of the existing tracks from streets that are to be cleared of street- | :‘reecnflw will follow shortly after that ate. The most interesting feature of the | entire project will be the construction | of a short subway to remove the C street cars from View as they pass the Capitol at what was formerly the in- tersection of North Capitol and C| streets. Although the tunnel through | which the cars will pass under an orna- | mental circle will be only a little more than 215 feet long, it will be the city's ar:it taste of underground transpor- jon. Thus, cars which now turn from | C street into Delaware avenue will con- | tinue east to First street before turning toward the station, at Thursday’s Luncheon. ‘The Washington Kiwanis Club will hold & Memorial day service Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at the Washington Hotel, with Rev. For a snort stretch these | * tracks will be uncovered, but shrubbery and trees will conceal them from the vista between the Capitol and Union Station. As they approach North C‘llrflol street these depressed tracks | will enter the tunnel, above which will | be an ornamental circle and fountain. | Leaving the tunnel they will gradually | rise and be on the surface again Just |t east of Delaware avenue. ‘When nearly all of the new trackage has been built there will be four points | at which special track work will have | to be installed to form the final ans“ that will tie the new lines in with existing tracks outside the Plaza area. ‘When these links have been made cars will begin running over the new routes and the work of taking up the dis- carded routes will be possible.
