LABOR DEPARTMENT’S ACTION IS ASSAILED Woman's Party Opposes Plan to Bar Women From Work- ing at Night. The action of the Secretary of Labor in sending a representative to the In- ternational Labor Convention, which opens in Geneva late this month, “to work for the continuance of an inter- national labor agreement which bars women from earning their living by night work,” was rapped in a siate- ment today from the National Wom- an's Party. Miss Muna Lee, director of national activities for the Woman's Party, said “women work at night because of the necessity of earning their bread. Only one-third of our States have laws pro- hibiting night work for women. On the other hand, two-thirds of our States leave night work open to women on the same terms as men. It i8 obvious, therefore, that the barring of women from night work in the l{nlted States is a minority point of view.” She said that the administration has declared for equality of opportunity for men and women, but “the policies of the Labor Department are mani- festly inconsistent with that stand.” Miss Alice Paul, founder of the ‘Woman's Party, who is now in Geneva, reports that women of other countries | are arriving there armed with pro- | tests against barring women from night | employment.
