THO G00D BOYERS NOW HINDER FIDEL Must Overcome Francis in Bout Tonight, Then Win Over Battalino. BY WILBUR WOOD. EW YORK, March 27.— Fidel La Barba is finding it much more difficult to win his second title than it was to acquire his first cham- plonship. Fidel was not long out| of the amateur ranks when he took over the flyweight crown by outpolnting Frankie Genaro, who had fallen heir to it upon the death of Pancho Villa. That was in 1925. La Barba had en- gaged in only a dozen professional fights when he dethroned Genaro. Unless memory fails, Fidel entered the hall of champions with less professional ex- perience than any other title holder with the cxception of James J. Jefirics. Got Title Quickly. ‘The big boilermaker knocked out Bob Fitzsimmons in his eleventh gtart. He had engaged in 93 rounds of boxing {r‘lor to his affair with Ruby Robert. Barba had boxed only about 50 Tounds as a professional prior to his tilt with Genaro. Genaro, the boy de- throned by La Barba, is still a fiyweight and recognized as champion in most places outside the State of New York. There remain two hurdles between 1a Barba and the featherweight title. The first one is the match with Kid Francis in Madison Square Garden to- | g5, night. The second is Battalino himself. Each is a stiff one. Fidel says that if he can get past Francis he will be willing to fight Bat- talino without asking for any reward other than the opportunity to win the title. Francis has the same ided. For some reason La Barba seems to fun into more bad decisions than any boxer has a reason to expect. Pos- sibly that is because he usually is the visiting gladiator.
