RADIUM REVEALS BATTLESHIP FLAWS)| Photo as With X-Ray Taken _Through Steel by Use f of New Method. By the Associated Press. Science has given the Navy a new way of making sure its fighting ships are structurally soand. It now figuratively looks through every piece of steel that goes into a wvessel's construction to see that it con- tains no defects that might endanger the ship's usefulness. A capsule the size of a pea containing radium makes this possible. It is placed 18 inches from a steel casting and a specially sensitized photographic plate is exposed on the other side. The re- sult is the equivalent of an X-ray picture. Chester Fully Tested. ‘When the last of the Navy's blg eruisers, the Chester, was ready service, 1tmput1nd.rydnck-t Hampton Roads and scientists from the Naval Research Laboratory here On t! whlch followed, the stern post broke and had to be replaced. It was cut up and examthation exactly confirmed v\hn'. had been revealed by photograph; Castings 10‘ inches thick have been successfully phowgnphed at the Naval Laboratory, where the process was de- veloped under direction of Dr. Robert F. Mehl, superintendent of the metal- Jurgical division. ‘The process utilizes the Gamma-ray. The same results have been achieved vl%x-ny by stepping it up to 1,500,000 ol Stmple and Portable. ‘The Mn.nun of the new method is described grl.mufl! in its simplicity -nd porub ity. It can be used where X-ray would be out of the question. ‘Beyond assuring the structural sound. ness of the Navy ships, the process great industrial possibilities in that it will permit ready experimentation in steel casting with a simple and certain check on the results, Heretofore, it has been necessary to cut a casting up in order to test it for defects. With Dr. Mehl's method it is now necessary only to “look through” it. FIRST SAORSTAT HEAD ¢ IN FREE STATE DIES Timothy Michael Healy Famed for Speeches in Parliament Yeers Ago.
