CALL NAT'L 1460 Natioral ¥ eliver Tssocialion AUCTIONS Drifted In on the Tide Santa Claus Dodges Ship’s Smokestdcks, but Sailor Gets Gift—Cheap Nitroglycerin Terrifies Pair of Tars in Port Said. BY ANGUS MACGREGOR. NEW YORK, December 27 (N.AN.A). —A fog-blanketed Port Sald & few weeks ago—a green-gray lo,n as thick as a messboy's skull—-and Nick English and Legs Turner, stomping through a dingy quarter of the town on the way to their ship, received a chill of sur- yri.se when & man bulked suddenly be- o}l;z them. He seemed to pop from no- where. The man, a canny English dler, placed his finger to his lips. * ! he sald, glancing around cautiously, “How would you two blokes like to buy some ‘soup’?” He held up a tiny glass vial in which an amber liquid gleamed sin- isterly. Nitro,” said Nick. Turner nodded. “‘Soup’ is power,” the man contin- - | ued, “and power is money. Think twice before refusing.” It did not occur to either of the sailors at the moment just how they could use nitroglycerin, by the stuff was cheap and might be useful later. They haggled for a while, got the price down to $1.25 in American money, and Legs put the vial carelessly in his dun- garee. The two continued on their way. Afraid of Collision. They chartered a small boat to row them out to their ship. The fog was as easy to see through as a man's head. “Legs,” sald English suddenly, “what do you think’ll happen if some one rams us?” “We'll have to swim, that’s all.” “But looka here, don't you know the least jar will explode that nitro and blow us all to pleces?" The sweat gathered swiftly on Legs® brow. Fortunately, the boatman didn't understand English. He rowed on placidly. The cronking and hooting of foghorns sounded all about them. Dim shapes of crawling ships appeared and disappeared. “Awhooo!" moaned the boatman periodically and jiggled his oars. That was his only warning to other ships. A very little sound it was, and the fog throttled it almost before it left his mouth. ‘We can't throw it overboard,” said Legs; “the harbor is too shallow.” So the two sat together in mortal terror, each feeling like a man with a lighted bomb in his hands. They got thi h the harbor without incident, but Jacob's ladder swung carelessly over their ship’s side presented a new diffi-: culty. Legs ascended with tremendous caution, and English, close behind, sup- ported his comrade as delicately as if he were a crate of eggs. Falls and Vial Breaks. Once on deck, the two breathed more easily, but there the accident ha ed. Legs, as blind in the fog as a bat In daylight, walked head-on into the deck house and careened over back- wards. A huge and rre terous oath burst through the wall of swirli; klmowed by the tiny twinkle of ken ass. English shut his eyes and clapped his hands over his ears to_shout out the sound of the explosion. But none came. After a minute of stunned silence Legs scrambled to his feet. “Are we dead?” he asked shakily. The two looked down at the shat- tered vial and the puddle of yellow liquid. “Say,” said English, “I thought that was ‘soup.’” ‘His mate stooped down and sniffed at the dampness cautiously. “It is soup,” he announced, “chicken soup.” Horrible Half Hour. Two fractured ribs are all that re- main to remind Julie Curtiss of the most horrible half hour he ever lived through, and he is thankful there is headed down the Atlantic cargo of tractors, was sent spect the cargo. A heavy ses was run- ning and there was danger, real danger, in loose crates. With ‘an electric torch, Curtiss clam- bered down the hold and squeezed by the huge cases. Near the bow he came | upon one case that had worn its stay rope to a frazzle nndmmfln{ ominously. And it was just at thal moment that the Cecil slapped into a thundering comber that shook her fore and aft. The case snapped h :.’h:u)u;vy as ufle 'mgqm of a utterfly’s wppl over the rm!mc Curtiss, = Case Caught in l‘ll!. Fortunately for him, the aisle was very narrow and one edge of the heavy cece caught against a bulkhead and was held there, but Curtiss’ life hung by a gessamer thread. The crate, press- ing against his chest, pinned him to the deck. At each lurch of the vessel, battling heavy waves, it shivered a little further down toward the helpless seaman. It was impossible for Curtiss to re- main calm, but calm was what was needed most. The m.h'at movement on his part and the Ponderolu crate, balancing on its edgr ike a tight-rope walker, would thunder down and crush him to death. Those were awful moments, spent in a blackness as thick as the grave's. He walted for what seemed an eternit ocounting the slaps of the waves agal the Cecll’s sides, llswnlnlw'.hehru off grumbling of the engines and the menacing creé-cree-cree of the cargo straining against its ropes. His face puckered with the intensity of his fright. He began softly to pray. Help came at last, but it was none 00 soon. The mate missed him and sent a man below to hunt him out. Cur- tiss' heart was pounding and fluttering. His clothes were limp with perspiration. He had been tral in all about 30 minutes, but in t half-hour he had aged 10 years. How much longer his heart could have stood the terrific preg- llllf, Curtiss fortunately never founa out. Santa on High Seas. Ships have chimneys which they call smokestacks, but no mention has ever been made of Santa Claus climbing down them and filling good seamen’s stockings. Seamen, of course, don't wear stockings and few of them are good, but the real reason, most sailors believe, is that reindeer are afraid of sea water. ‘Well, then, query many, why doesn't he use sea gulls? And that, according to Vincent Espagliotti, is just what Santa did this year. And Vincent has & five-dollar gold plece to prove it. On the morning before Christmas, a large gull picked up a fish off Staten Island and repaired to the rigging of the Biloxi to enjoy its repast. Vincent wnmhed idly as the rapacious bird dug into the poor fish's carcass. Sud- den ly he saw a bright gleem and heard a joyous tinkle at his feet. There was a bright five-dollar gold piece, which the fish had evidently swallowed some time before. “Merry Christmas!” said Vincent to bird and fish and walked off with his present. At least, Vincent tells this story to any who will listen, and crosses his heart solemnly to assure those who say “Baloney!” (Copyright, 1930. by the North American Newspaper Alilance.) D. A. R.
