By the Associated Press. A higher tariff on wheat, rather than a temporary embargo as suggested by Chairman Legge of the Farm Board, was advocated yesterday by Senator Steiwer, if world prices drop to a point permitting -importations over the 43- cent tariff wall. ‘The Oregon Republican said it was “essential that adequate steps be taken at once to exclude imports of wheat ! | because the Farm Board has the price, and if the foreign market goes down to a point where they can import over the duty, we would be buy- lni' Canadian wheat at the pegged price.” Steiwer expressed fear foreign rela- tions might be harmed by an embargo, but said he would not oppose an em- bargo if the Tariff Commission found it could not invoke the flexible provi- slons to raise the levy. He also advocated a rise to 15 per cunl in the present duty of 10 per cent on bran, shorts and other by-product feeds obtained from milling grains. Imports of these by-products have in- creased considerably from Argentina and Canada. STUDEBAKER SALES. LONDON, December 27.—Announce= ment that the “company of adventurers” of England trading into Hudson's Bay will not at present receive their usual dividends marks another of the many fluctuations in the romantic history of the Hudson's Bay Co. It began centuries ago by bartering with Indians and trappers for furs to be transported to London, and it since has rarely known a humdrum decade. At the start it had td build forts for its employes and stores, on the one hand, and on the other defend its char- ter inside and out of Parliament. And the furs it has sold have been in price the most mercurial of com- modities. After the stock market crash in New York last October, the price of furs fell 45 per cent. To protect its income from these fluctuations the company in recent years has gone into the sale of land on a big scale and into retail merchandis- ing through chain stores scattered over the Dominion. But the plight of Ca- nadian wheat farmers during the vast year has told heavily on profits from these two sources.
