Special Dispatch to The Star. HYATTSVILLE, Md., December 15— A cigarette started a fire yesterday morning which, for a time, threatened a part of Hyattsville’s principal busi- ness district. A customer in_A. Botkin's_clothing store on the Washington-Baltimore Boulevard between Johnson avenue and Spencer street laid a cigarette on the counter and it ignited some goods quickly, creating a menacing blaze. Mr. Botkin summoned the Hyattsville Vol- unteer Fire Department. The blaze was subdued after a half hour, during which it had worked into the roof and proved stubborn. The loss was estimated at $1,000, and is understood to have been covered by insurance. The Bladensburg department also responded. Va., December 15.—A compromise out of court was reached in Federal Court at Elkins Priday in the damage suits of Carroll Russler for $30,000 and E. Euglow for $10,000 against Mrs. J. H. Jenkins of Winchester, Va., for personal injurles sustained by the plaintiffs as a result of an automobile-motor cycle accident on the State highway south of here the past Summer, The amount of the set- tlement was not_announced. Russler and Euglow, in the United States Aviation Service, were riding their motor cycle to Russler's home here to atted a birthday event for Russler’s father. Thelr cycle collided with the Jenkins car, driven by a son of Mrs. Jenkins. Russler, who lost a leg in the accl- dent, and Euglow, who sustained frac- tures of the ankle, subsequently insti- tuted sult for damages in the State court, the case being transferred to Federal Court at Elkins. . Huffman, a merchant living five miles north of Luray. The loss was partly covered by $5,000 insurance. Mr. Huffman was aroused by the cry- ing of his infant child.
