North 0790 TROUBLES THREATENED BY STATIONS IN CUBA == 3, Three of 1,000 Watts or More Power Are Potential Source of Inter-American Difficulties. Add to the potential sources of inter- American broadcasting troubles the three Cuban stations, operating with 1,000 watts or more, not to forget the 50 OW-WI"AI' recently proposed for Excluded from the wave-sharing agreement in force between the United States and Canada, the Repablic of Mexico this year licensed 16 new sta- tions. Nine of them have powers and are on wave lengths which spell inter- ference with Canadian-American broad- casters, Today there are 35 broadcast- ing stations in Mexico, and their trend is toward higher and higher powen ‘One even contemplates going to 50, watts. Cuba has more than 65 stations, but, fortunately for the rest of North Amer- ica, these are nearly all of extremely lTow powers and usually staggered on wave lengths between those used in the other North American countries. The new Cuban log, however, shows that CMK, Havana, is operating with 2,000 watts on 730 kilocycles, the channel assigned exclusively to Canada, on whlch CKAC-CHYC-CNRM, near Mon- treal, and CKCL-CHLS, CKFC, CKMO and CKWX, Vancouver, are also oper- ating. Station CMCQ, Havana, is operating with 1,000 watts on 955 kilocycles, mid- way between 950, a United ‘States re- gional, and 960, another Canadian ex- clusive. Then there is CMW, Havana, with 1,000 watts on 600 kilocycles, a channel shared by stations in the United States and Canada. These, added to the mnnx number of Mexi- can “squatters” on the United States- Canadian waves, portend trouble in the near future.
