James Robert McKee, only of the late former President Harrison and his first wife, e Scott Harrison, died early to- day at her home in Greenwich, Conn., after an illness of eight months. With her when she died were her husband and son and daughter. Mrs, McKee was formerly Miss Mary Scott Harrison. Her mother was the first president general of the National Society D. A. R. She had been ill since dai last February when she went to Roose- | velt Hospital in New York for an opera- tion. After several weeks she was re- moved to the McKee home, Berkeley Lodge, in Greenwich, where her con- dition fluctuated until the end came. A frequent visitor ‘to Washington, Mrs. McKee spent a Winter here some time ago as the it of Mrs. Stephen B. Elkins to pre!fl‘- daughter, Mrs. Reisinger, then Mlss Mary Lodge Mc- Kee, to society. Mrs. Russell B. Harri- son, sister-in-law of Mrs. McKee, and the former's daughter, Mrs. Robert Lewis Armstrong, make their homes in ‘Washington. Mrs, Hobart Brooks and Mrs, John F. Parker of this city are cousins of the deceased woman. Prominent Charity Worker. Mrs. McKee was prominent in charity work and D. A. R, circles in New York, where the family lived for many years, and in Indianapolis, where she was married to Mr. McKee, then of Indian- apolis, in 1884. She was a lifelong and devout Presbyterian, a member of the Central Presbyterian Church in New York. More recently she was an active member of the Pirst Presbyterian, Church in Greenwich. She was honor- ary president of the Woman's Auxiliary of the latter chirch. She was active in the various war activities, and was treasurer of the “Militia of Mercy” or- nized during the war by Mrs. John ;l‘nys Hammond. She .also was an officer in the Bird and Tree Club, or- ganized for relief work following the war, and was an enthusiastic worker for “Christie Street House,” which has been such a boon to unfortunate men. Mrs. McKee was educafed in Indian- apolis and at Ogontz Seminary in Phila- delphia, and has been active in the kin- dergarten work undertaken by the alumnae of Ogontz. She was one of the belles of her day in Indianapolis and in Washington, where she was a leader among the young people of the Senate circle when her father was a member of that body, during which time her mar- riage took place. Inspired White House Dance. She and her children spent the greater part of their time in the White House during her father’s regime as President. During her mother’s lliness and after her death, Mrs. McKee was mistress of the White House, discharging those duties with rare grace, cordiality and tact. Ben- jamin Harrison McKee will return to Paris, where he is connected with the National City Bank. The funeral service will be held at the home at Greenwich at 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Mrs. McKee will be Intcrred in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. SAF ASP THE WORK ON WATER FOR ALEXANDRI Pipes Being Laid to Wells on Ice Company Property. Supply Low. ALEXANDRIA, Va., October 28.— Work began today to hook up the city water supply with the artesian wells of the Mutual Ice Co., on North Payne street, from which approximately 750, 000 gallons of water will be taken daily to help conserve the small supply of water which remains in the Barcroft Reservoirs of the Alexandria Water Co. A pump has been brought here from New York to lift the water to the mains, and 1,500 feet of 6-inch pipe is being laid from the ice company plant down Payne street to Madison | street, where it will connect with a 16- | inch main of the water company. Other artesian wells at the ice company's | former plant at the foot of Cameron | street and at_the abandoned plant of |the Robert Portner Brewing Co. on | Wythe street are also available and may have to be used. 90,000,000 Gallons Supply. At the preséit time there is less than 90,000,000 gallons of water in the Bar- croft Dam, which normally holds 750, 000,000 gallons. The water level is about 23 feet from the top of the dam. Daily consumption is about 2,500,000 gallons per day. Urhan 8. Lambert, manager of the Alexandria Water Co., sald yesterday that he hoped the artesian wells and the remaining water in the reservoir would be sufficient to supply the city until rains come. The supply on hand, however, is the lowest in the history of the water company, and citizens again were urged to use it as sparingly as possible.
