C, 1930 OIL PROFITS | | Low Price Levels Now Held Weak Point in Industry as Output Mounts. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, October 25.—Earnings of petroleum corporations for the full year will be well under the levels of 1929 and adequate improvement in oil least the start of heavy consumption next Spring, according to a current survey by the Standard Statistics Co., which follows, in part: “The unprofitable level of petroleum prices continues as the main factor responsible for the low rate of current earnings among the great majority of oil companies. Margins, particularly for gasoline, are extremely slim and have been further accentuated, to those concerns marketing the bulk of their product, by the extensive price wars spreading throughout the country. Cleveland is the latest area to report a drastic cut in retail quotations, and it is doubtful that another price war can now be averted on the Pacific Coast. “In the crude division, considerable uncertainty currently centers around price cutting in the mid-continent ter- ritory and the announced reductions in certalh Texas areas. While such reduc- tions will, natorally, aid some in widen- ing the profit margin of refiners, they will, nevertheless, be equally detrimental to prodocers and, furthermore, will weigh heavily against those concerrs caught with a large supply of crude in storage. “In the meantime, production of crude remains under the beneficial influence of strict proration throughout the country, and this method of volun- tary restriction has been given added impetus by the recent Oklahoma Si- preme Court decision upholding the constitutionality of the State oil con- servation laws. In the refining divi- sion, some further cut in .he output of crude has been accomplished. = Such efforts to date, however, have not been sufficlent to offset the seasonal decline in gasoline consumption and stocks have been substantially added to during the past week.” BANKS ARE DECLARED | IN GOOD CONDITION than 2 inches high. ———e NECESSARY SELLING HELD COMPLETED Market Values Declined Over $3,- 000,000,000 in Week, Financial ‘World Reports. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, October 25—Accord- ing to the Pinancial World Index, se- curity values have been reduced $13,- 170,000,000 since the recession set in on September 10. This compares with the $15,070,000,000 ~depreciation in _the April-June decline. From June to Sep- tember values .increased $3,829,000,000. The current week of October 16 to 22, inclusive, marks a_decline of $3,090,- 000,000 in stock values. recoyery on October 20 added ‘l 401,000,000 to values, but this was ptly canceled by the recession on '.he 21st—amounting to $1,230,000,000, and the 22d of $360,000,000. The sha reduction in brokers’ loans was wel proportioned to the decline in nock.s and accounted for little change in “ratio of loans to market values,” whlch stands at 5.3 per cent. The volume of turnover in stocks, being so small, is hardly indicative of active public par- ticipation, which is undoubtedly limited to some financial but mostly mental distress selling. With a depreciation in market values of $33,408,000,000 since last Fall the bulk of the necessary liquidation has ly been completed. Investment demand is being mildly felt but is not of proportions to stimulate any sharp recovery in prices. This will come— due to technical forces with the market in an oversold condition, the paper says. puibialhi i I 0. K.’S WATER PIPE LINE ON MILITARY ROADWAY Secretary of War Approves Appli- cation Filed to Relieve Drought in Arlington County. ‘The Secretary of War yesterday ap- proved the application of the board of supervisors of Arlington County for an easement to lay a 6-inch cast iron water pipe line along Military road, be- ginning at the present 8-inch main at the intersection of Arlington avenue and extending along the road for about 1,000 feet. It was explained that this action was due to the commercial and residential properties along that road being at pres- ent without water because of the drought. The easement is for 25 years and is granted to the Arlington County water department, which is the grantee in the easement for the 8-inch line from Rosslyn to Reservation line. . Kn‘ Morrow Tnlkl JERSEY CITY, October 25 (#)— From one who ought to know comes the statement that Dwight W. Morrow “has no sense of time.” For illustra- tion, said this person, “think of the men’s dinners which begin at 7 and go into all hours of the morning, with five times as many speakers as necessary speaking five times more than any one wants to listen to and five times as long as anybody could stand.” The remarks were made to the Jersey City's Women's Club. Special Dispatch to The Star. KANSAS CITY, Mo., October 25.— Bankers' conventions held through the territory tributary to this city this week have brought opinions on the probable outcome of the next few months. Gen- erally it is felt that while trade will be below normal, so far as anything except essentials is concerned, there will be a steady movement of commodities within the buying power of the interior. Most bankers declared that the strong banks in the larger centers are in ex- cellent condition, while the small banks in the little towns are running close to their limit of reserves and in instances are being closed by the boards of direc- tors to save further complications. At the same time money for essential loans is fairly easy and farm loan funds are ample. tes on farm loans remain as for 2 years at 5% per cent plus 1 per cent éommission and insurance companies are furnishing funds for loum liberally. They, however, are so limiting the conditions under which Joans will be made that the amount loaned is much below normal. Applica- tions are heavy, but are sifted down to the utmost limit in order that there may be no chance of loss. Some confidence is expressed that when the grain now being held goes to market the financial situation will clear to an appreciable extent. The one hope of the business interests is that there shall be an elimination of the buyers’ indifference and the tendency to do without commodities, a condition that has existed for the past two months.
