Bennett were sen- tenced last night on the unanimous verdict of a jury of directors to “life terms” at the mission which they have built up into an indispensable agency for the Protestant Churches of ‘Washington. 300 Persons Join in Tributes. | This was only one of a score of in- | dividual tributes paid to the super- intendent and his wife, who were ac- claimed at a testimonial dinner given | for them in connection with the forty- sixth annual meeting of the organiza- tion. Approximately 300 persons joined in honoring the Bennetts at the dinner, which was held at the Raleigh Hotel. A solemn note was sounded when Dr. Earle Wilfley, pastor of the new | National City Christian Church and | the principal speaker, warned that the coming Winter will make demands upon missions throughout the country as they wnever have before, and urged the sup- port of local churches. Both Mr. and Mrs. Bennett were presented with substantial gifts of gold. Mr. Ramsey, a director; Mrs. Ramsey, representing the Woman's Guild, and Mrs. A. E. Benmer, for the Evening Auxiliary of the mission, made the presentations. The speakers included Dr. Gove G. Johnson of the National Baptist Me- | morial Church; Rev. Freeley Rohrer of | the Metropolitan Presbyterian Church Dr. Stmpson B. Daugherty of the United Brethren Church; Rev. Porier, modera- | tor of the Columbia Associatfon of Bap- tist Churches; Dr. Chesteen Smith of the Hamline M. E. Church; Dr. Jason Noble Plerce of the First Congregational Church; Rev. John C. Copenhaver of the Epworth M. E. Church; Dr. W. E. Paul of Minneapolis, Minn,, and E. H. DeGroot, president of the board of di- rectors, who presided throughout the evening. Homer Rodeheaver, internationally known song leader, and his sister, Mrs. Ruth Thompson of Roanoke, Va, led in singing, and Mr. Rodeheaver, who arrived in New York Friday night from Europe, played the trombone with which he led the famous Billy Sunday meet- ings. He will sing and play at two mass meetings today. Both Mr. and Mrs. Bennett responded feelirgly to the tributes paid them. Mission Made Public. At the brief business meeting the re- rts of the mission were made pub- , showing 39,505 free meals furnished during the year ended September 30, an increase of 191 per cent; 23,137 men furnished shelter, an increase of 33 per cent, and an attendance of 29,179 at religious services. A 25 per cent in- crease was noted in professed con- versions and an increase of 15 per cent in receipts from contributors, or $29,- 393. J. L. The receiver was -p&;mud on peti- tion of the Twentieth Century Press, to which $3,322 is due. The petition listed the assets of Diggs & Co. as $4,375,000 and liabilities at $3,600,000. Both the petitioner and Diggs & Co. said the latter corporation is solvent, but forced sales would prove disastrous in the present time of depression and the receivership would result in a con- servation of assets. g Trust Co. was named receiver. E. J. A. Burke, a fiyer, and two companions, who have been unreported since October 10. Atlin is about 180 miles north of here. Burke was accompanied by his me- chanic, Emil Kading, and “Bob” Martin, & prospector.
