Whalen, attorney, was in jail today awaiting sentice by Justice Peyton Gor- A jury in Criminal Division 1 of the District Supreme Court returned its verdict late yesterday to Justice Gor- don after deliberating 15 minutes, ‘Whalen had been indicted for em- bezzling the money from Miss An- nie Hurley of Hyattsville subsequent to December, 1927, Miss Hurley, who had been employed by The Evening Star for 35 years as a copyholder, was pen- sioned in November, 1927.
