By the Associated Press. A strong interest in Cuba, which be- gan before the War with Spain, s eall- ing Senator King of Utah to revisit the island sometime in the near future, probably before October 1. Senator King was elected as a repre- sentative from Utah to the Fifty-fifth Congress. The Cubans were in rebellion sgainst Spain and this country was growing restless under the strict neu- trality policy of President McKinley. “I went to Cuba to see conditions first- hand,” Senator King sald yesterday, “and dodged about the canebreaks for & couple of months. Part of the time I was with the Spaniards end part with the revolutionists, and all of the time I was a little uneasy, for people in de- tention camps were dying of starvation like files, and out from the towns machetes were slashing at Spaniards and anybody who looked like a Spaniard. My interest in Cuba and its people has been keen since.” ‘The Senator returned and made & speech advocating_interventisn by the United States. Then came the sink- ing of the Maine, the war, and eventu- ally Cuban freedom. King sald he was not going with any preconceived notion, but added he had heard recurring reports that the rights of American citizens had been violated. He contended he felt that affairs on the island would come to the attention ef Congress in the near future and said he wished to see for himself how things were going. Several Senators talked of going to Cuba before the December session and two, Thomas of Oklahoma and Walsh of Massachusetts, Democrats, already have made the trip. Thomas has re- turned, but Walsh is still on the island and King said if he remained a week or so longer he might see him there. A resolution for a Senate investiga- tion of Cuban affairs to determine whether the rights of Americans under the Platt amendment to the Cuban constitution were being violated was introduced at the Seventieth session by Senator Shipstead, Farmer-Labor, Min- nesota. Hearings were held, but no s¢- tion was taken and it was mot reintro- duced at the last session. King said he had no plans now to introduce a similar resolution, but re- iterated he thought there would be de- mands for an inquiry. SMART OUTFIT WORN Black and Crystal Form Costume for Evening.
