ARLINGTON WATRR | FROM HOLMES RUN Minor Changes Could In-| crease Flow From Great Falls to Serve County. s the fourth of a series of articles ‘Gre of especial timeliness in ac- t 0} the serious drought from which Washington arec has suffered this mer. They deal with ‘e present ture water supply o/ Washington ns o land and with a_pre- v a committee. created ne " suogestion of Lieut. Col. U. S. Grant, 3d, director of the National Cap- Commission work to find Planning v begun BY DONALD A. CRAIG. While the capacity of the condults from the Great Falls of the Potomac River to Dalecarlia Reservoir is -now | 160,000,000 gallons of water per day, this capacity could easily be increased by minor changes in the syystem, ac- cording to the United States Engineers’ Office, to 200,000,000 gallons per day. “To further increase the supply from Great Falls, in_order to continue to serve Arlington County after about 1955, | or to supply portions of Maryland, addi- | tional conduits and other works would | be required,” adds the Committee on Water Supply Problems in its prelimi- nary report to the National Capital Park and Planning Commission. The drainage area of the Potomac Basin above Great Falls is about 11,460 square miles, while the discharge of drought. water at Great Falls has varied from a| = ' maximum of 300,000,000 gallons per day to 422,000,000 gallons per day, accord- ing to figures furnished by the com- mittee, The Potomac River and its tributaries are subject to sudden and very great variation in the flow of water. Basin Has Large Area. Many persons fail to realize the ex- tent of the Potomac River Basin. For instance, all of the water from the Shenandoah Valley, which is collected by the Shenandoah River over an ex- tent of many miles, is discharged into the Potomac River at Harpers Ferry. The South Branch of the Potomac River is a great river in itself, while the North Branch of the Potomac rises on the very edge of the Ohio Valley. Numer- ous smaller streams flow into the Poto- mac River from the eastern or northern side, and some of their headwaters are found in the vicinity of Gettysburg, Pa. The attention of the committee has been called to the fact that other cities and towns above Washington, such as Cumberiand, Harpers Ferry, Hagers- , will_divert some water from the Potomac River for water supply. Besides these diversions, it is also neces- sary to consider the probability, must be constructed between Great| Falls and Washington but, also more storage of water above Great Falls must be provided to increase the minimum flow in dry seasons to a safe margin above the requirements for water sup- ply. Such storage must be provided independently or in connection with navigation, power, park. scenic or other developments in the upper valley.” The committee says it has made no estimates of the cost of providing stor- age facilities nor the cost of & new conduit and other work between Great Falls and Washington. That is left to be done by the Army engineers and | their assistants at any later period when it may be considered necessary. The mains installed in Arlington | County, Va., about two years ago were | planned on’a basis of receiving water | From the District of Columbia at Chain | Bridge. If the District should cease to supply Arlington County, the country | would naturally prefer to receive water | from these mains in this vicinity, in | the opinion of the committee. The | Potomac River at this point runs as low | as 240,000,000 gallons per_day, due to | the diversions at Great Falls and in leased at sea level at Little Falls in large and assured quantities, sufficient for the water supply of the whole region. | “Against this suggestion question has | been raised as to possible pollution of the lake above any dam at Chain Bridge and as to the relative costs of sewers and water conduits between Great Falls and Little Falls.” No estimates have been made by the committee of these costs, but have been left for a later period when the matter is taken up more seriously. From Holmes Run. Alexandria gets its water supply from Holmes Run, which it conducted into & reservoir on the hills back of the city This run, or what is left of it, runs off | eventually to the Potomac River by way | | of Hunting Creek, south of Alexandria | city. | "No detailed study of any method to| increase the water plan from Holmes | | Run is included in the committee’s re- | | port. So far as can be ascertained from | | the report, Alexandria is not in danger | of suffering from a water famine, on! | account of the large Alexandria Reser- | voir, above the city. The stream which the | spite of the small flow brought by feeds it, however, is comparatively small, | committee points out, of more rapid | tributary streams entering below Great| and in the present drought has fallen to WASHINGTON, WHERE ALEXANDRIA GETS ITS WATER Holmes Run is conducted into a reservoir in the hills above the city, and water is stored there for use in case of v de 1 No definite nor detailed plan: hange the system. MUMMIFIES WIFE'S BODY TO PERPETUATE LOVE Italian Gets in Trouble With Po- lice After Two Years by Evasion of Burial Law. DUESSELDORF, Germany, Septem- ber 17 (N.AN.A) —Love beyond death caused an Itallan lawyer to keep his wife’s mummified body at his home for more than two years, but when police jearned of it they started trouble.
