THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17; 1930. ARGENTINA DESIRES . RECOGNTION Uriburu Promises to Restore | Friendly Feeling Establish- | ed Under Madison. BY JOHN W. WHITE. By Radio to The Star | BUENOS AIRES, Argentina, Septem- | 2ot 17.—<hile having broken the diplo- | matic ice ana recognized the Uriburu yegime here as the de facto government, the eyes and ears of Argentine authori- ties and the general public are concen- trated on Washington, where, it is| hoped, President Hoover will soon sign those few short lines which constitute formal recognition of a new government Gen. Jose Uriburu and the men asso- eiaced with him in the provisional gov- | ernment have on every possible occasion shown an earnest and studied effort to | enter into cordial relationship with the | American Government and people, their attitude being in sharp contrast to the | belligerent anti-Americanism of the Iri- | goyen regime. | Uriburu Promises Envoy. Gen. Uriburu has promised in news- paper interviews to appoint an Ambas- sador to Washington as soon as the United States recognizes the new gov- ernment—a promise which has been unanimously applauded by newspapers, which expresses hope for an early re- newal of that cordial and close rela- | tionship between Argentina and the United States, which had remained un- broken from the day President Madison ized the new republic and ap- pointed Thomas Lloyd Halsey first American consul to Argentina, in 1813, | until the advent of Hipolito Irigoyen's | administration. Consul Halsey arranged the first loan to Argentina and is credited with having saved the life of | the young Argentine republic During the following 103 years, until | 1016, Argentina on. many occasions | Jooked to the United States for help | and guidance. Its constitution and form of government were inspired by the American example and its school system is a Spanish copy of Horace Mann's _educational set-up, installed here and operated for many years by a group of American school teachers brought by Sarmiento. New Governors Rest. ‘The members of the provisional gov- ernment rested on Sunday following their strenuous first week in office, the only important act of the day being Gen. Uriburu's radio conversation with the United States. The people of Buenos Alres amused themselves as they do on Sunday and there was no indication that anything abnormal had recently happened. Despite the poor business conditions, | more_than 3,000,000 pesos were bet at the horse races, Sunday's turf event being one of the most important of the year's program. | Routine government activities for the | moment are largely concerned with re- izing the administration and un- covering the tremendous graft and ir- regularities of Irigoyen's administratfon. ‘The latest sensation is the disclosure that one high government official ac- cumulated 7,000,000 pesos ($2,520,000 at | today’s exchange) during the two years | he was in office and sent the money sbroad, where it is now available in his exile.
