ri STOCKS END WEEK INSTEADY TREND Bears Forced to Retreat in Final Dealings After Raid Fails. BY CLAUDE A. JAGGER, Assoclated Press Financial Editor. NEW YORK, Septemter 13.—Fresh bearish activity gave the stock market sufficient resiliency to close about [ today, after a further drop dur- hg.h e first hour of trading. e market was highly professional, and price fluctuations represented little save the activity of floor traders who did not leave town for the week end last night. The decline of the past two days left the 'gneul Jevel prices some- what below, that of a week ago, but ‘bears were disappointed by the meager- ness of the week end selling, and when they tried to buy back their shares in the last hour found fi)flerh‘llgsd scf::‘:‘ Leading shares generally ralliel the morning’s lowest levels but failed to regain much of yesterday's losses. CANADA'S TRADE FUTURE BRIGHTENS Manufacturing Activity Has Been Maintained Above Last Winter’s Levels. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 13.—The position of Canada at the present time, from the standpoint of trade and in- dustrial conditions, is still somewhat analogous to that of the United States, says the Standard Statistics Co., which continues in part as follows: “‘Manu activity in the Do- ) , has been maintained throughout the Summer at levels con- siderably above the low mark of last Winter, Employment indexes for in- dustry as a whole, moreover, show a retention of the bulk of the Spring gain, a condition at variance with the continued downward trend in the United States. An outstanding con- structive factor is the continuance of record activity in the construction of public works and hydro-electric instal- lations, a convincing indication of gen- eral confidence in the future prospects for the country as well as an important practical aid in limitipg unemployment. “Profits of the majority of Canadian tions will be at least moderately jower for the year 1930, as compared with 1920, with particularly unsatis- factory results in prospect for agricul- tural equipment ~manufacturers and concerns engaged in the production and marketing of commodities which have fallen in market value. “With the assurance of a larger Canadian wheat crop than that of last year, however, and with slightly better pects for marketing it, economic activity in early future months should not compare too unfavorably with a year previous. Analyzing the long range aspects, on the other hand, the mediocre outlook for the immediate future becomes entirely dwarfed in the light of convineing potentialities which are likely to be increased rather than lessened, in our estimatiori, by the re- cent election of the Protectionist party to power in Canada.
