SEATTLE, September 13.—Trial of the Lyle-Whitney prohibition conspiracy ease, brought abruptly to a halt by the collapse on the witness stand of Earl Corwin, one of the defendants, will be vesumed in Federal Court Monday. Defense attorneys said they hoped Corwin, who was reported suffering from an incurable disease, would be able to continue his' testimony after the week end recess. . During a brief appearance yesterday en the witness stand Corwin spoke of his connections with Alfred M. Hub- bard, principal Government witness, who had testified to giving Corwin a radio as part of the alleged bribes paid by the rumn-runners to prohibition chiefs. Hubbard had testified he acted as the go-between in the collection and distribution of protection money while serving as an undercover agent in the prohibition office. Corwin testified the radio was an ob- golete model: of & type made by Hub- bard and given Mrs. Corwin after Hubbard had lived at the Corwin home for some time. Hubbard previously tes- tified the radio was a gift from Roy Olmstead, former liquor-runner. Corwin was preceded on the stand by his co-defendants, Roy C. Lyle. former administrator; Willlam M. Whitney, Lyle's chief assistant. and R. L. Fry- ant, former agent. Y.; the New York State Library, Albany, and the Pennsylvania State College. She has done much bibliographical work and teaching in library schools. She re- ceived her training in the New York State Library School. In her new position Miss Vought will serve as head of one ‘of the six major divisions - of the ‘office of educa- tion. The responsibility will rest with her for the publication of statistics on libraries, and directories of librarians. She also will be the Government’s con- tact agent with officers of the American Library Association and will co-operate with that organization in the publica- tion of technical bulletins on libraries. She will - organize and supervise the binding and cataloging of thousands of sheets of survey reports and issue them to colleges of education.
