Churches of the World | |C0VENANT PASTOR Notre Dame de Pamele, Oudenarde, Belgium ALMOST seven centuries have passed since the day the first stone was laid for Notre Dame at Oudenarde, for it was on the 14th of March, in the year 1235, that building operations com- menced. Arnold, Seigneur of Oudenarde, furnished the money with which to erect this structure, but he died before it was finished. His wife, Alix, continued financial support, however, and four years after the foundation stones were laid it was thrown open for the first time to the colorful throng which came for the celebration. ‘We have here an example of the Pointed style shortly after it had as- sumed an existence separate from the Romanesque, at the bqinnlnc of the fourteenth century, first as lect model of the first Poi.nted l'.y and second because Arnould de Binche, who furnished plans, is the earliest known Belgian mm who made archi- tecture his study. ‘The plan of Notre Dame de Pamele comprises & nave of four bays, with aisles and a clerestory, transepts and choir of two bays, also clerestorated, and with aisles carried around the five- sided apse. At the intersection of the cross rises an octagonal tower, sur- mounted by a low spire of the same shape, which comprises, with the other parts, a remarkable pleasing piece of architecture, ‘There was talk during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries of remodeling | the entire structure after a new plan, and it seems that the only factor which prevented this was lack of money. This | was perhaps as well, for had it been done it would have deprived the coun- try of one of the rarest and most val- ued of ancient monuments. Very slight changes have been made; but the only ones that add to the beauty of the building were those made to the interior, which has been cleansed of its paint and whitewash to reveal the nat- ural color of the anclent stonework.
