From the Front Row Reviews and News of Washington's Theaters. “Scarlet Pages” Feature at the Metrapolitan. ¢4 CARLET PAGES," whose world premier took place modestly at the Metro- politan yesterday, is not- able chiefly for bringing Elsie Fer- guson to the talking screen. Those who remember Miss Fer- playing opposite Wallace ‘Peter Tbbetson,” prob- ably the hand- somest couple on the screen at that time, and a poignant and memorable picture from every point_of view, will find Miss Ferguson more than a mite older. The camera-—it must be said—is not always kind to her. However, in her restful moments she is still very lovely to look at and reminiscent of days of yore. She is, furthermore, another recruit from the stage who adds muth to the cinema, since her acting is calm, natural and inherently graceful. Her ‘characterization of the woman Jawyer in this film is a distinct achievement and guaranteed to pro- voke tears among the female mem- bers of the audience. The picturization of the success- ful stage play of the same name is good old “hokum” from first to last. Although in the courtroom scene the district attorney keeps crying out “This is no theater—this is—" the aroma of grease paint and lipstick is evident and the situations are typical of Broadway in its most theatrical vein. h Something of “Common Clay” is tranfused into this. Instead of the lawyer finding out that the way- ward girl is—all the time—his own daughter, Miss Ferguson, as the wizard of the courts, discovers that the gal she has been pleading for is her own daughter. ‘The transposition of all this to the screen has not been done too smoothly—one can count “Act 1, Act 2” with ease and wonder if per- haps some of the sets haven't been moved to Hollywood. However, what with a murder, a father that isn't a father, a chorus girl, a nameless child, an elaborate trial, many cries of “Object!” and ‘“Objection sus- tained!” this picture has all the “gags” that any palpitating customer ecould want—and Miss Ferguson. The cast in support of the star is ot remarkable. Marion Nixon is hard-boiled—as she should be—but otherwise uninteresting, and Grant Withers walks in and out a couple of times. The others, even the dis- trict attorney and the two villains, are and no more. Martinelli, in rare voice, very nearly blows the roof off in a selec- tion from “Aida,” and Graham Mc- Namee making the current news in- teresting in The Evening Star-Uni- versal News, and comedies complete ‘the bill. E. de 8. M. Elste Ferguson, Ruth Chatterton’s Fine Acting At Fox Handicapped by Play. INE acting in hollow characters and cleverly designed situations * which lead to no adequate conclu- sion furnish the chief impression of Ruth Chatterton’s production, “Any- body's Woman,” which is offered for the change of bill at the Fox Theater. Admirers of the star and of Clive Brook and Paul Lukas have the pleasure of seeing them in action, but there is no inspiration in the development of the plot that is car- ried through to the inevitable climax. ‘The man of talent and the woman of human qualities are finally united, despite their apparent capacity for disagreement. It is undisputed from beginning to end that their romance will surmount all obstacles and there is no convincing reason to question this result. Just why friends of Miss Chatter- ton should complain that she is afflicted with assignments of the type of “Madam X" is not apparent in this film, for, notwithstanding the defects in the vehicle, she shines as an artist possessing the training and polish that are always asso- ciated with the best that the stage has to offer, and if there is any out- standing judgment of her acting that is to be offered it is that versatility and sympathetic understanding of everyday people are notable in her %_Wnll equipment. Messrs. and Lukas approach the mark that she sets in “Anybody’s Woman.” Even in the scenes of intoxication, which furnish the turning points in the careers represented, there is a fine appreciation of acting that is true to the nature of the characters represented. In the development of the stage ams et the Fox there are two nevitable favorites of the moment —Eddie Peabody, who has an un- canny ability to extract music from the banjo and other musical instru- ments, and Bob West, whose leader- ship at the organ is inducing Wash- 1 audiences to sing while he mixes the more pretentious selec- tions with the popular songs placed upon the screen. The Peabody fea- ture of the week is the use of his {:lvufii‘:e gufl&-&!mmmefic én sus- n; e n part Leop Brusilofl’s Fox Orchestra in operatic music. Stilts aid in the nvrmnuuon of the “Skirts Idea,” offered by Fanchon and Marco, and they are skillfully manipulated, while there is much interest in the rest of the bill, which includes Neil Castagnoli, master of the clarinet; Julia Curtis, a young of good voice who employs sm; Ruth Silver, prima donna; who exhibits a syn- thetic horse reminiscent of old-time productions, and the regular chorus with its number celled “Up in the Air.” The Fox Movietone News film " The Cambria-Majestic 1324.26 Euclid Street N.W. 4 Rooms, Kitchen and Bath, $57.50 WHEN ONE NEEDS REHOUSING IT BECOMES A DIRE NEED Getfing out of a rut in living is a known cure for nerves. In the FOREST SECTION of the COUNTRY CLUB DISTRICT of CHEVY CHASE ves atten as usual, to current —— N Barrymore and Whale Stars at Earle Theater. JUDOINO from the lady who said twice in no uncertain terms, that she was going to faint, “Moby Dick,” at the Earle, is not to be viewed by squeamish people. It is. however, one of the most virile and satisfying pictures that have been produced. It presents John Barry- more in a role which he did for the silent screen well, and does even better now that sound has over- taken him. Herman Melville's classic of the white whale that swallowed a man’s leg and brought an eventual purga- tory on himself, is an exciting tale and one that those with the tang of the sea in their blood will enjoy from first to last. As is customary in any Barrymore picture, the photography and the general atmosphere are excellent. Although one may speculate cn the material out of which a studio whale is made, the illusion of a great fight is there and as the blood spurts up into Ahab's eye and his harpoon bites deep into the flesh, one feels convinced that a deed of Woobw, heroism has been accomplished and that Ahab will no longer resent the loss of his leg. This picture is first and foremost and always John Barrymore's. He dominates it—just as he dominates the “Shanghai Lady.” But never does his characterization pall, nor is there 'a moment when he seems anything but the gusty Ahab. He is. of course, helped immeasurably by Joan Bennett, who, in the role of the girl who waits and waits and waits, gives one of the most re- strained and unartificial perform- ances current on the screen. One wonder a little why she doesn’t change an lota during that long seven years’ vigil—but since Miss Bennett is blessed with comeliness, the wonderment is certainly not hard to bear. Of all the characters, including some splendid one-eyed sailors, & chocolate-colored heathen, and a bar-mistress nodding over her jugof beer (?) Lloyd Hughes, alone, as the villainous brother, seems not at all made of the stuff that villains should be made of. He is calm and collected throughout and even at the villainous moment when he is trying to choke the life out of his brother, he behaves himself as whose imagination the picture is well worth anybody's while, Mr. Melville should standup —wherever he is—and doff his hat to_Mr. Barrymore. T SEEMS impossible to do away with the glorious Garbo. For a third week she is tearing out heart- strings as the siren prima donna of “Romance,” at the Columbia. She has been likened to the great thespians of the past, and, say what you will about the feebleness of the material at hand, Miss Garbo never for a moment allows you to think about it.
