August 19.— Twenty thousand Catholics from the United States and Canada Sunday g:d reverent honor to North America's t three Christian martyrs, Saints Isaac Jacques, Rene Goupil and Jean de la Londe. These three men, slain in a ravine here by Mohawk and Iro- quols Indians after suffering horrible tortures, were canonized by Pope Pius XI at Rome June 29. The Pope was represented by Rev. Pietro Fumasoni Biondi, who yesterday made his official visit to the scene of the martyrdom. It was the most col- orful ceremony in the long history of the Auriesville shrine, known as the ‘Shrine of the North American Martyrs. A group of Iroquois Indians, descend- ants of those who tortured the three missionaries, attended the ceremony. ¢ Bishop Edmund of the Gibbons of ‘Albany, in whose diocese the shrine is situated, sang the pontifical mass in the shrine chapel yesterday morning. Very Rev, John S. Wynne, 8. J, vice ulator of the cause of the mar- saints, preached the sermon. Rev. Peter 8.
