Lower Levels. BY CLAUDE A. JAGGER, Associated Press Pinancial Editor. NEW YORK, August 9—The stock market, enfeebled by yesterday's ocd.e-h of selling, ended the week in a wishy- ‘washy manner today. Many bears took their profits, which caused & rather swift rally for a time, as they bid actively for the shares which they had sold short at higher levels. But the rally soon petered out, and stocks sold off under renewed pressure in the last 15 minutes. Several impor- tant shares closed a point or two under | vesterday’s final levels, and a few losses | Tan from 3 to 5. A sprinkling of shares | closed 1 to 3 higher, with American Telephone the strongest feature. The market opened without the del-| uge of selling which such a sharp hrell as that experienced yesterday would) have caused in & market with large | public participation, but selling grew active during the first hour as no signs common to 750, 000 shares from 500,000. Iron ore shipments from upper Inke ports in July totaled 8,586,649 tons, com- pared with 10,670,882 in July, 1929. Shipments for_the season to August 1 | totaled 24,324,222, compared with 32- 910,820. ~ Ore receipts at Lake Erie ports in July totaled 6,345,995, compared with 7,509,408 in July last year. Recelpts for the season to August 1 were 16,097,792, compared with 22,438,384. A petition is being circulated on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange to declare August 30, the Saturday pre- ceding Labor day, an exchange holiday.
