THE SUND STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., AUGUST 1 PART THREE. BANDITS WHO SLEW OFFICER AT LARGE Trio Killed Vigilante While Fleeing From $15 Hold-up and Kidnap Farmer. By the Associated Press. MAQUOKETA, Io August 9.—Three bandits who robbed a drug store of $15 escaped and killed a vigilante and later kidnaped a farmer, commandeering his automobile, still were at large today, sought by Towa and Illinois authorities. The trio late last night released the kidnaped farmer, Robert Moore, 50, of ‘Tipton, Iowa, who told authorities here he believed the bandits had rented another automobile at East Dubuque, Il where he was freed. Early yesterday the robbers held up employes of the Lage Drug Store in Davenport, Iowa, obtaining but $15. The word was passed along to be on the lookout for their car. R. G. Sproat, 51, a Cedar County wvigilante, who with two companions ambushed the escaping car near Tip- ton, was shot three times in the back | and killed. The killers continued, but a short time later overturned their car in the mud near Moore’s farm. They ap- pealed for help, saying one of them was injured and asking that he drive them to a hospital. Moore agreed and soon after found himself a kidnap victim. He was held more than 12 hours while :m abductors drove along by-roads all ay. Gov. John Hammill of Iowa author- ized a reward of $500 for the arrest and conviction of the slayers, pointing out that three other Iowa officers have been slain recently. ATTACKER IS EXECUTED ugust 9 (). — year-old Port Ar- thur colored man, whom mobs made three attempts to lynch for alleged tacks on white women, was electro- cuted at the State Penitentiary here at 12:097 a.m. yesterday. He was the first man ever electro- cuted in Texas for an attack upon a colored woman. At his trial July 2 in Port Arthur, however, two white girls identified him as their attacker, Willlams was whisked away from a Port Arthur mob, and later officers guarded his life against two mobs that stormed the Beaumont Jail, where he ‘was taken for safety. Wealthy Retired Importer Dies. OAKLAND, Calif. August 9 (#)— Philip Shepheard Teller, 69, wealthy retired importer and for three years member of the United States Shipping Board, died yesterday at Alameda.
