DERBY IS FEATURE IN STAR NEWS REEL Fairfax Disaster Also Shown in New Release, With Gra- ham McNamee Announcing. | One of the most thrilling racing track events ever depicted on the screen is| being shown today in the latest Evening Star Universal Newsreel at Warner's Metropolitan, other Warna Bros.' thea- ters and leading Marylan8 and Virginia | ‘Theaters. The race is that of the famous Eng- lish Derby run at Epsom Downs. Blen- heim, an 18-to-1 shot, won the great classic in a_thrilling finish, coming in ahead of his stable mate, Rustom Pasha, which was picked as one of the favorites The race was hard fought from the start to the winning post. On the home stretch Blenheim was third and several lengths behind, but gradually made up the distance, overtaking the two leading horses and coming in A nose ahead un- der the wire. Blenheim was ridden by Jockey H. Ragg and owned by his high- ness, the Prince Aga Khan. This was the prince’s first victory at the Derby | races. Despite the fact that thousands | had lost their money on their favorites. they cheered the winner wildly, and Prince Aga Khan leaped into the center of the track to acknowledge their en- thusiasm. McNamee Describes Race. Graham McNamee, National Broad- casting Co. ace, gives such & glowing ac- count of the race as it is depicted on the screen as to make it an.‘actual racing event just as seen at the tracks. Other thrilling events are shown in the reel, including a striking scene of the ocean on fire off the coast of Bos- ton, Mass. The fire followed the wreck of the tanker Pinthis, which was ram- med by the steamship Fairfax. The Fairfax pulled into the harbor with a great hole in its bow, while the tanker went to the bottom, of the sea, 100 feet down. Gas tanks aboard the ship were torn apart, and the boat belched out thousands of gallons of gasoline. The fluid burst into flames as it reached the surface, and the fire continued un- til the gasoline was burned out, despite the efforts of the Coast Guard to ex-| tinguish it. | A thrilling battle was fought by the | U. S. Army Corps_at Governors Is-| land, N. Y. in commemoration of the fight at Red Buttes nearly 100 years | ago when pioneers from Missouri, on | their way to Oregon, were attacked by | Indians. | Scout Ceremony Shown. In the sham battle a train of 40 covered wagons were used, and soldiers = dressed up as Indians circled the cara- van, firing on men, women and chil-| dren. U. S. Cavalry arrived in time, | however, to defeat the Indians and saved the pioneers from the tomahawk and scalping knives. An interesting spectacle is shown at | Flag day ceremonies at Independence Hall, Philadelphia, where 30 troops of Boy Scouts, organized during the past year, were presented with parade-size by members of the D. A. R. Other interesting events include the adrennial convention of the Seventh- | y Adventists at San Prancisco, which was attended by almost every race on the face of the globe; the replanting of the rice fields by Japanese school children to take the place of the grain ruined by the earthquake, a log-sawing contest at Idaho, in which the Higbee | thers won the crown from Australia; | the launching of the death boat at Windermere, England, in which Sir Henry Segrave was killedgafter making & record of 1119,6 Efiewr h;‘l:lr. the transporting of pr! ston ls by airplane by Mrs. Frank Flegel of Jack- son Heights, N.
