THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., FRIDAY. THE VOGUE FOR ENSEMBLES RULES EVERY ROOM E ERY piece of furniture has to “go with” something else nowa- days. It is a very sensible fashion, for that is the way furniture is used— with other pieces. For instance, one sits down to read. His very first need is a lamp. And his next need i€ a place to set his book down, a place for a jar of candy, smoking things, or other small accescories that he will want at hand. An Ensemble like the illustration is handy and charming. Let us show you the many related pieces that will make your living more worth while. And, remember, at Mayer & Co. you buy Lifetime Furniture with an honored past, a living present and a future of great MAYER & C Seventh Street 8 Between D and E A RWLLVST | WASHINGTON TOMB Mount Vernon Pilgrimage to Be Final Event in Anniver- sary Program. La Varre, Jr., of Wash- ington Is Released From Prison in Georgia. Special Dispaich to The Star. ATHENS, Ga., June 6.—After spend- ing & week in prison at Augusta on charges of contempt of a United States Court, William J. La Varre, jr., 30, of Washington, D. C., was released on 45,000 bond by Federal Judge Bascom 8. Deaver here. La Varre, former publisher of four newspapers in this section, came to Georgia and had voluntarily surren- dered to the authoritles, asking to be placed in jail and at first refusing bail until he was granted a hearing, tenta- tively set for June 16. ‘The contempt charges grew La Varre's lengthy litigation with Har- old Hall, his former associate, of one Georgia and three South Carolina newspapers. Hall claimed partnership, which La Varre denied, the Iatter claiming that he had negotiated for a loan of several million dollars from the International Paper & Power Co. to purchase Southern newspapers. La Varre declares that he borrowed the money from the company under the misapprehension that it was a paper out of company and was making a loan to de- | velop a market and not to influence the policies of his publications. When he refused to turn the papers over to commissioners appointed by the court he was adjudged in contempt. La Varre is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William J. La Varre of 1215 Emerson street, Washington. $25,000 FUND. ASKED RAEORET A President Beeks Sum for Entertain- ing Visitors at Yorktown.
