FINANCIAL. (URB SHARES FIRM S PRESSURE LIFTS Bears Abandon.Attack as Of- ferings Dwindle on Decline. Oils Active. BY JOHN A. CRONE. @pecial Dispatch to The Btar. “"'NEW YORK, June 6.—Resuming the fxregularity that characterized trading Thursday, the Curb ‘Exchange opened lower today, but when the bears found it was impossible to dislodge sizable blocks of stocks, as shown by the fact that offerings dwindled, pressure was lifted. Public utilities backed and filled most of the session, but coppers, motors and investment trusts and trading corpora- tions inclined to hcaviness. Electric Bond & Share, which is ex-dividend 113 per cent stock today, declined after opening higher. Citles Service again eased fraetion- ally and the rights remained active near their previous closing levels. American Cyanamid B again encoun- tered moderate offerings. Ohio Oil, which is linked up in a S:N line deal with Illinois Pipe and Oil of New Jersey, braced. Cosden was moderately active and reg: fstered a range of 2 points as it alter- ately rose and fell. ‘The decline in Ford Motor shipments in April and In the first five months, ‘coupled with reports of the proximity of usual seasonal shut-downs of other companies, created some heaviness in automotive securities. Cord and Ford Motors Limited were the first issues to move lower. Noranda Mines reacted following the directors’ announcement that the quar- terly dividend had been reduced from 78 to 50 cents. Newmont Mining opened off 7 and other metal shares weakened. Cables* & Wireless shares here in the forenoon failed to reflect the decline in London, where it was announced that cable rates would be brought down to the level of beam wireless rates. Continued pressure against Goldman Sachs Trading, which recently omitted its quarterly dividend, brought it down 1o & new low level for the year. Trans- america, however, was not offered as freely as on Thursday. Lion Oil Refining was off }; point at 26% following postponement of the directors’ meeting Thursday. ‘This gathering, which was to act on divi- dends, was put off until June 17 owing to the absence of President Barton. Schulte-United Stores was moderately active but unchanged, following the May sales report which showed an increase of $1,001,100 over the same 1929 month. BONDS ON THE CURB MARKET. Special Dispatch to The Sta: NEW YORK, June 6.—With the stock market shrinking in size uncll daily | transactions are less than 50 per cent | of the moderate turnover in June, 1928 | and 1929. It is of interast to check up on the position of prices today com- pared with those of 12 months ago. It was at this time last year that prepara- tions were being made leading to the biggest era of speculation in the coun try’s history and reaching the highest | i price average on record in September. | By various measurements expressed in | average quotations both industrial and | raflroad stocks are now below the levels : of the first week in June last year. The | one is off about 5 points and the other | 10 points. Dividend-paying railroad is- sues show slightly less decline for the period than those that are not paying off thelr profits to shareholders. Industrial List. ‘Within the industrial list there are irregular tendencies between the various general classifications of stocks. For instance, the manufacturing group is over 25 points higher than in June, 1929. Food stocks are up about 2 points, while the oils are within a point of their average price last Spring. ~Against this is the decline of 7 points in iron and steel stocks, of between 35 and 40 points in the coppers, nearly 30 points in equipments and about as much ‘in the motors. In smaller categories of stacks there are some that show improvement over market values last year and others that have fallen well below the bottom figures of last November. The large list of investment: trusts and trading corporations is still char- acterized by an urusual and hard-to-ex- plain shrinkage from the basic point of liquidating value. They have never fully recovered in popular esteem what they lost in prestige by their unfor- tunate action in the general collapse last Autumn. . The Treasury Department will not go into the silver market at this time, as its stock on hand is adequate for all visible requirements. The metal, now selling at 35 cents an ounce, has reached the lowest figure in the history of the country. The decline in price has been rapid in the last 10 years. In 1918 the metal sold for $1 an ounce under the Pittman act fixing that price in con- nection with purchases from domestic producers to replace silver dollars sold to England during the war. Since the Government completed purchases un- der that act the price has steadily de- clined, until today it has reached the lowest price in the history of American finance. - While officials have been cognizant of the steady decline, no recommenda- tions looking to checking the decline and aiding in an advance have been forthcoming, except from the legislative. Government, where pro- ls have been made to impose & lfl‘:drzmmemmbuwon silver imports. These proposals have been pending in Congress, the first in connection with the tariff bill and the latter in the House ways and means committee as an independent measure, but favorable action has not been taken on them. The Senate voted for a silver duty, but the House rejected the proposal when the first tariff conference report was brought in. Unsettled conditions in China and India are said to be the main causes for the price decline.
