DALLAS, Tex., May ,21.—As the Quadrennial General Conference of thé Method'st ' Episcopal Church South neared its close today an attempt was begun {0 protest formally the exonera- tion of Bistiop James Cannon, jr., of charges of stock market speculation. Apparently more concerned im the election of ‘a third new bishop and perfection of plans for the consolida- tion of several educational boards, most delegates apparently considered -the Cannon allegations a closed issue. Judge G. T. Fitzhugh of Memphis, prime mover in the convention fight against the militant Washington, D. C., bishop, declared, however, would protest exoneration on the ground that such action of the epis- copacy committez was illegal. Fitzhugh said he had new evidence to support his Jatest attack. This evi- dence, it was:learned, consisted of sev- eral telegrams exchanged between the bishop and. Kable & Co., defunct New York brokerage house. Jogephus Daniels, former Secretary of 'the Navy, one of those who sought to bring Cannon to trial, in a statement indicated his belief that Cannon had been saved “by the quality of mercy which drops on erring bishop and congoan alike.” Two of thres bishops authorized have been elected. Paul B. Kearn, pastor of the Travis Park Methodist Church at San Antonio, 47 years old, and Arthur J. Moore, pastor of the First Church at Birmingham, 41 years old, were the selections. An important subject deferred until today was discussion of the temperance report, to which Josephus Daniels has promised to take exception. Daniels objected to inclusion of parts prepared by Bishop Cannon.
