JAGGER, Associated Press Financlal Editor. NEW YORK, May 21.—The stock market again found itself at a fork in the road today and was unable to de- cide which way to turn. Speculation for the rise, concentrated in the rail and food shares, made some headway for a time, but was hampered by another spell of speculative apathy, and the weekly steel trade feviews, pub- lished early in the afternoon, were rather disheartening. The first rallway operating income reports to appear for April have pro- vided little encouragement. The freight car loadings figures for the second week of May, appearing today, showed a de- cline of nearly 9,000 cars from the previous week, when an upturn of about 36,000 was shown, and the total wasg again far below the Jike periods of 1929 and 1928. There have been sev: eral sporadic efforts of late, however, to start an upward move in the rails, based on favorable dividend yields in this period of cheap money and vague rumors of constructive developments in prices still glving groun: Age, “aud with selling increasingly ag- gressive the lull in the iron and steel market has become more pronounced. Iron Trade Review pointed out that, in addition to unsteady demand and de- clining prices, a new complication had been added by the revision of freight rates. The American Petroleum Insti- tute's weekly statistics were also less favorable, showing a moherate gain in crude production and a new upturn in gasoline stocks. New developments in the copper sit- uation were declaration of & dividend of only 50 cents by Calumet & Arizona, compared to $1.50 three months ago, and a slackening of consumer buying. Among the more reassuring items in the day's news was the statement by James A. Farrell, president of United States Steel, at the foreign trade con- vention in Los Angeles, that despite the present low levels of export and import trade, the world outlook is improving plication of the Peninsula Auto Express Co. and the Baltimore Transfer Co., which is planning a fast truck service throughout the Eastern Shore. Supporters claim that the service will mean store-to-door delivery as far South as Cape Charles. Opponents, consisting »f seafood dealers and independent truck | operators, maintain that the service will not be as efficlent as that already in op- eration, while the small carriers will forced from business. The other applications have been filed by Donald H. Baysinger, the Victor Lynn Transporsation Co. and H. B. Watson, who are asking rights over some portion of the routes named by the ofher com- panies. MERGER TERMS ARRANGED.
