BY ROBERT SOUTHEY. (Robert Southey, 1774-1843, was a. British poet and miscellaneous writer of consider- able fame during his lifetime, but not so widely read of late years.) In the words of Henry W. Elson. in his “Modern Times and the Living Past,” the occasion of the death of Admiral Nelson (Horatio Nelson, Vis- count, Nelson of the Nile, where he de- feated the French fleet during the Egyptian campaign of Napoleon, who was born in 1758 and died in 1805) was as follows: ‘The British admiral, Nelson, on Oc- tober 21, 1805, engaged and almost an- nihilated the French and Spanish fleets at Trafalgar, off the coast of Spain. ‘England expects every man to do his duty’ were Nelson's memorable words as the battle opened. Like Gustavus Adolphus (of Sweden) at Lutzen, Nel- son lost his life, but his victory was complete. The supremacy of England on the sea was assured and Napoleon's last hope of invading the island king- dom was gone.” ‘The death of Nelson is thus described by Robert Southey: It had been part of Nelson's prayer that the British fleet might be distin- guished by humanity in the victory which he expected. setung an example himself, he twice gave orders to cease firing on the Redoubtable, supposing that she had struck, because her guns were silent, for as she carried no flag there was no means of instantly ascer- taining the fact. From this ship, which he had thus twice spared, Nelson received his death. A ball fired from her mizzentop, which, in the then situation of the two vessels, was not more than 15 yards from that part of the deck where he was standing, struck the epaulette on his left shoul- der about a quarter after 1, just in the heat of action. He fell upon his face, on the spot which was covered with his poor secretary’s blood. Hardy, , who was a few steps from him, turhing around, saw three men raising him up. “They 'have done for me at last, Hardy,” $aid he. “I hope not,” cried Hardy. “Yes,” he replied, “my backbone is shot through. Yet even now, not for a moment losing his presence of mind, he ob- served, as they were carrying him down the ladder, that the tiller ropes, which had been shot away, were not yet re- lemonade to alleviate his intense thirst. He was in great pain and expressed much anxiety for the event of the ac- tion, which now began to declare itself. As often as a ship struck, the crew of the Victory hurrahed, and at every hurrah a visible expression of joy beamed in the eyes and marked the countenance of the dying hero. But he soon became impatient to see Hardy, and as that officer, though not often sent for, could not leave the deck, Nelson feared that some fatal cause prevented him and repeatedly cried: “Will no one bring Hardy to me? He must be killed! He is surely dead!” An hour and 10 minutes elapsed be- fore Hardy could come to him. They shook hands in silence, Hardy in vain struggling to suppress the feelings of that most painful and yet sublimest moment. “Well, Hardy,” said Nelson, “how goes the day with us?” “Very well” replied Hardy. “Ten ships have struck, but five of the van have tacked and show an intention to bear down upon the Victory. I have called two or three of our fresh ships 'round and have no doubt of giving them a drubbing.” “I hope,” said Nelson, “none of our ships have struck their colors.” Hardy answered, “There was no fear of that. . ‘Then, and not till then, Nelson spoke of himself. “I am a dead man, Hardy,” said he. “I am going fast. It will be all over with me soon. Come nearer to me. Let my dear Lady Hamilton have my hair and all other things belonging to me.” (The love affair of Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton is one of the most famous in history.) Hardy observed that he hoped Mr. Beatty (the surgeon) could yet hold out some prospect of life, “Oh, no,” Nelson replied; “it is im- possible. My back is shot through. Beatty will tell you so.” Hardy then came once more and shook hands with him, and with a Seal:t almost bursting hastened upon leck. By this time all feeling below Nel- son’s breat was gone, and Nelson, hav- ing made the surgeon ascertain this, said to him: 'You know I am gone. I feel something l‘\slng in my breasf he said, putting his hand to his left side, “which tells me so.” And upon Beatty's inquiring whether his pain was very great, he replied: Sixth street northwes north 24 feet 7 inches, o a public alley: inches, thence west to the beginning. trustees do not sell sald premises, from this sale, nd running thence thence south 24 feet 7 the oven instailed in and therefore it is excluded to be established by the One-fourth of the pur- chase money to be paid in cash, the balance in_three equal instaliment the promissory no Terms of sale: Tepresented by of the' purchaser, pay- nd theee interest at 6 per cent per annum trom "day ot “gale, ‘payable semi-annunily, secured by deed of {rust upon ihe broperty soid. or afl at tha ontion of A deposit, of '$500 reauired of “burchaser at me” of sate. Yet,” saild he in a lower voice, “one would ke to live a little longer, too.” Capt. Hardy, some 50 minutes after he had left the cockpit, returned, and again taking the hand of his dying friend and commander, congratulated him on having gained a complete vic- tory. How many of the enemy were taken he did not know, as it was im- possible to perceive them distinctly, but 14 or 15 at least. “That's well” cried Nelson, “but I hargained for 20.” mAndd then, in a stronger voice, he “Anchor, Hardy: anchor. Hardy, upon this, hinted that Admi- ral Collingwood would take upon him- self the direction of affair: ‘Not while I live, Hardy,” said the dying Nelson, ineffectually endeavoring to raise himself from the bed. “Do you anchor.” His previous orders for pi pcri.n{ to anchor had shown how clearly he fore- saw the necessity for this. Presently, calling Hardy back, he said to him in a low voice, “Don't throw me over- board,” and he desired that he might be buried by his parents unless it should please the King to order otherwise, and then sald: “Now I am satisfied. Thank God I have done my duty!” Hardy stood over him in silence for a moment or two, then knelt again and kissed his forehead. “Who is that?” said Nelson, and being informed, he re- plied, “God bless you, Hardy!” And Hardy then left him—forever. Nelson now desired to be turned upon his right side and said, “I wish I had not, left the deck, for I shall soon be gone.” Death was, indeed, rapidly ap- gronchlng. He said to the chaplain, ‘Doctor, T have not been a great sin- ner” 'His articulation now became difficult, but-he was distinctly heard to ;;{.vl.‘_"rhmk God” , /1 have done my ‘These words he repeatedly pronounced and they were the last words which he uttered.
