NEW YORK, April 21.—A porter in & telephone company building at Long Island City was arrested yesterday, charged with homicide in the death of & telephone operator in the building | Saturday night. | The porter, James Hughes, 26, of Flushing, was held in $10,000 bail after another telephone operator charged he | kicked Mrs. Stephanie Werner, 22, into an elevator shaft after attempting to kiss her. Mrs. Werner died of her in- | juries. Mrs. Werner and Miss Barbara West- | lake entered the building late Saturday night to go to work. There was no elevator operator in sight and Hughes offered to take them upstairs, Miss Westlake said Hughes stopped the elevator between the third and fourth floors and attempted to Kiss Mrs. Werner. She opened the door and sought to leap to the third-floor land- ing. but Hughes, Miss Westlake said, kicked her, so that she struck the edge of the third-floor landing and fell 60 feet to the bottom of the shaft.
