YORK, April 21.—Public utili- | ties, amusements and chain store stocks led’ the upside of today's mixed curb market, as coppers headed the downside. lectric Bond and Share, Eastern States Power B, Brazilian Light & Trac- tion, Niagara Hudson Power and United Light & Power A were among the first ities to surpass previous high.record marks. Crocker-Wheeler Electrical early moved to a new peak before meeting profit taking. Although the oils in the rst two hours were not especially active and showed comparatively little change, Petroleum Corporation of America, an oil investment trust, gained more than a point to a new maximum price. Radio-Keith-Orpheum rights were admitted to dealings and opened at 1's. Securities Corporation General also was admitted today. National Fuel Gas was the first of the gas stocks to climb into new high ground. Lone Star Gas met increasing bids at higher levels, but some of the recent leaders lagged. Fox Theaters A featured the amuse- ment group as it moved up nearly a point to a new high level on big blocks. v, McNeill & Libby advanced on news of a recapitalization plan which proposes to wipe out present preferred accrued dividends through issuance of new preferred stock. Hygrade Food, which was off a point, was an excep- tion to the uptrend in food shares. Easter business of better than antici~ pated proportions started buying in the chains, such as Chain Store Develop- ments, Metropolitan Chain Stores and Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea. Goldman Sachs, in point of activity, ‘was an early star performer in the in- vestment companies. Fireman's Fund Insurance was the first of the insurance shares to move into new high territory, while Selected Industries claimed that distinction in the trading corporation division. NEW YORK, April 21 (#.—The Beech-Nut Packing Co. reports first quarter earnings of $554,339, equal to $1.24 a common share, compared with $580,041, or $1.37 a share, in the corre- sponding quarter of 1929, First quarter earnings of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Co. were $1,294,157, equal to $3.27 a share on 340,505 shares of common stock, as against $939,982, or $2.34 a share, during the first quarter of last year. April 21.—Redis- - counts in the fifth Federal Resefve dis- trict have made a seasonal increase of $3,300,000, due in large part to crop planting, according to the weekly state- ment of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. The total earnings assets of the bank, however, are still about $27- 000,000 lower than at this time last year, which is attributed in part to a: recession in business, In the past two weeks there has been an_increase on the checks handled. . The total reserves of the bank are: In excess of $108,000,000, as against $78, 000,000 for the corresponding 1929 pes" riod. The reserve ratio is 78.12, against 56.56 a year ago.
