B—4 THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., MONDAY, APRIL 21, BANDITS CAPTNE |[From the Front Row * TELLS OF THREATS Knowledge of Spanish Saved His Life, Cassidy Declares. Kidnapers Are Slain. 8y the Associated Press. MEXICO CITY, April 21.—Leonard | B. Cassidy, American employe of the Transcontinental Fruit Co., arrived in Mexico City yesterday on his way home | after gmmf away from a group of men who kidnaped him last Tuesday and released him only after many times threatening to kill him. Cassidy told the Associated Press that he was going straight to Peabody, Mass., for rest and recuperation. He said that for more than 36 hours he had been under constant threat and fear of death, with revolvers pressed to his head or back, while being held in the vicinity of Tuxtepec, state of Oaxaca, After a month's rest at home, he| lans to return to his work again in | Mexico. | His escape with his life, he attributes | to the fact that the bandits held noth- ing against him personally, and to the fact that he speaks Spanish and under- | stands the Latin temperament. | Since his release, the government has announced that troops under Gen. | Felix Gonzalez have caught Fernando | Ramirez, Esteban Pena and Gustavo Cruz Silva, three of Cassidy’s kidnapers, and executed them. They were young fellows whose ages ranged from 23 to 25. Cassidy declared the kidnapers were ugly at first, constantly telling him they were going to kill him, but after he had told them it was useless to kill him for they would not get a ramsom, they began treating him better. | D — | In 140 strikes reported in India last | year 500,000 workers lost & total of more | than 1 000 working days. Reviews and News of Washington's Theaters. “Hello Paree” Is Good “Burlesque.” ANAGER Lake of the Gayety burlesque house, the only one in Washington by the way, has reason to feel pleased with the reception of “Hello Paree,” this week’s attrac- tion. While not a record breaker in the matter of new ideas, it neverthe- less shows good results in the effort to modernize the old sport and to give it a place among legitimate theater attractions. Burlesque, from time immemorial, has been given the wicked tag, and 4oubtless to many it is wicked in a waj. Yet, for the same reasons, pre- cisely the same may be said of the big, spectacular revues that year after year attract our “best citizens.” And it is to be remembered that from the ranks of burlesque have sprung some of America’s finest en- tertainers. Lee Hickman, tramp comedian, who heads the “Hello Paree” company, has methods of his own, perhaps not the most delicate to be imagined, but which pleasé his audiences and start them into a laughing -evening. He is funny and no mistake. Mil- dred Franklin, his featured assistant, is a blues singer of note, and if you like blues songs, you are going to like her way of singing them. The sou- brette, always an important adjunct to a burlesque show, is represented in “Hello Paree” by Eleanore Abbie and Eida Langor, two of them, and they pleasantly deliver the goods ex- pected of them. Dorothy Fuller, the prima donna, is a singer of charm. Others who act well their parts are Billy Woodall, a young dancer worth while; Milt Davis, comedian: Alan Bard, an excellent singer, and a chorus that is just as delightful in its evolutions and accomplishments, even if smaller, as those of the big, high-priced _shows. ~ Burlesque pa- trons will like “Hello Paree.” “Damaged Souls” at Little Theater. THE Little Theater, at Ninth and G streets, reopens this week un- der new management, with a photo- play entitled “Damaged Souls,” en- tertainment which it frankly an- nounces is “for women only.” The idea of injecting clinical disclosures in a picture for public entertainment doubtless will be questioned in some quarters. The picture is a starring vehicle for_Corliss Palmer. New liquid drops are safe O excuse for painful corns and calluses. Only one drop of this amazing liquid removes them scien- tifically. First it deadens pain in 3 seconds. Then corn shrivels up so you can peel it off. Millions use it because it is safe. Beware of imi- tations.
