Representative Bacon of New York today introduced a bill to rename B , ‘which is to be improved from oln Memorial past the Capitol, to L'Enfant_avenue, in_honor of Maj L'Enfant, who, under the direction of President Washington, prepared the plans for the Capital City of the United States. | Representative Bacon said that the development of the Mall is in accord- ance with the original plan of Mal. | L'Enfant, pointing out that B street | runs along the Mall and that it is to | be improved from a shabby street into | one of the most beautiful and import- | ant thoroughfares of the National Capi- | tal L ! “There will not be a private build- | ing the entire length of this thorough- | fare, the improvement of which has al- | ized under the Ar-| 1 Bridge act,” said acon. “The plans for | ent_of B street, which will be | lined with Federal buildings on one side and the Mall as the central gar- den of the Washington-L'Enfant plan on the other, call for making this one of the most beautiful avenues in the world along which it is intended that all fu 1 corteges will pass, carrying the N honored dead from the Capitol to Arlington National Ceme- tery. “It is preposterous that such an im- portant thoroughfare would be desig- nated by the name of B street, and it is most_appropriate that in carrying out the Capital development plans profect- ed so many years ago by Maj. The hundreds of thousands of visitors to the National | Capital will be much more interested in ‘L'Enfant avenue' than they would be in 'B street. “In addition” Representative Bacon pointed out, “it is an opportunity for this Government to pay a graceful tribute to France in a reciprocal way, since France already has named some of its most important squares, avenues and streets after outstanding Amer- icans, such as Washington, Franklin and Wilson, and has named one of its squares after the United States itself.” i WOMAN BADLY HURT BY PASSING MOTOR Miss Lauman Suffers Fractured Ankle When Hit by Automobile at Street Intersection. Evans was arrested by police of No. 10 precinct on a charge of reckless driving after he had taken the injured woman to George Washington Hospital.
