STOCKS IRREGULAR Money to Loan rod by first doed of trust on real estate. S ealing interest and commission. Joseph I. Weller 4% Wash. L. & Trust Bldg., 9th & F N.W. INUPWARD TREND ward, Despite Heavy Volume of Selling. BY STANLEY W. PRENOSIL, Associated Press Financial Editor. NEW YORK, March 26.—The stock market pursued an erratic course today as opposing speculative interests con- tinued to struggle for control of the price movement, but the main tendency appeared to be upward. Fifty, or more, issues moved into new high ground for the year on gains ranging from 1 to 9 points, while a scattering of others sold down 1 to 5 points on profit taking and bear selling. While the volume of trad- was not as large as that of yester- day, the ticker again ran far behind the market, the delay at the end of the third hour being more than 30 minutes. Good Business News. ‘Two constructive business develop- ments helped to maintain bullish en- thusiasm. They were the report that ex« port sales of copper yesterday were the largest of any single day since last September and the Iron Age Review's report of & small upturn in steel pro- duction, the first since the middle of Call money renewed at 314 per cent and was in fairly plentiful supply at that figure. The time money market was dull and somewhat firmer, pre- sumably in reflection of the two in- creases in bankers' acceptances yester- day. Officials of the New York Federal Reserve intimated that they are com- mitted to an easy money policy as a stimulus to business, but the rise in bankers’ acceptances leads to the belief that no further reduction in the redis- count rate is contemplated at this time. Several commission houses adhere (o the theory that the recent rise in many issues has been too rapid, and urge a lightening of speculative commitments and scale buying of seasoned dividend paying industrials. Extensive switching from recent leaders to issues believed to be behind the market accounts for much of the recent irregularity. Changes Recorded. Vanadium Steel, which has been the spectacular individual performer all week, again moved over a wide range today. The stock, which dropped from a record high of 1241 to 114 in the last hour of trading yesterday, ran up to 122 today and then fell back to 116 before fresh support was forthcoming, Public utilities were again in the forefront of today's advance. Electric Power & Light was the spectacular feature, crossing 89 to a new high for a gain of more than 10 points. Western Unicn, which has been weak on rumors of new financing, jumped 8 points, Brooklyn Union Gas 6 and American Power & Light 3% to a new top at 115. One block of 35000 shares of Gen- eral Electric changed hands at 80, fol- lowed by a further advance into new high ground. Among the many other issues to eclipse their previous 1930 high prices were United Aircraft, Na- tional Air Transport, Bullard Co., Inter- national Harvester, Johns Manville, Commercial Solvents, Mathieson Alkali, Conde Nast, Air Reduction, Columbia Gas and Superior Steel.
