5 FINANCIAL CURB SHARES FIRM AT SHORT SESSION Profit Taking Well Absorbed. Utilities Show Bet- ter Tone. BY CLAUDE A. JAGGER, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, March 8—Week end profit-taking was well absorbed in to- day’s short session of the stock market, and the bull crowd was able to push several of its favorites 1 to 4 points turther into new high ground for the year. A wide sprinkling of shares closed lower, but losses were for the most part moderate. The utilities, which have been rather heavily sold of late, displayed a better tone. Some of the investment trusts were again buoyant features. Lehman Cor- poration rose nearly 4 points to a new peak above 90. Goldman Sachs rose nearly 2 points, and the Blue Ridge | issues were again firm. Shenandoah mon sagged a fraction in profit- 8. United Light was a firm spot in the utilities, getting back above 40 with a gain of more than a point. American & Foreign Power warrants and Electric Bond & Share sold up nearly a point each. Hydro Electric, however, ran into considerable realizing and closed a point lower. Oils were quiet and ir- regular. Humble lost a point, while Cities Service gained fractionally. In the mines Newmont sagged a point. Crocker Wheeler was a strong spot in the industrials, in sympathy with recent strength of electrical manufac- turing stocks on the big board. The stock jumped more than 3 points, get- ting well above 30. American Chain, recently brought to the fore in re- Under the “information at source” provision of the revenue act, ns making payments to another of “fixed and determinable income” of $1,500 or more during any calendar year must make a return thereof if the recipient of such payment is single. Information returns are regnired on Form 1099 and must be accompanied by a letter of transmittal on Form | 1096. The filing date is on or before | February 15. The returns are filed | with_the collector of internal revenue | for the payor’s district. | Information returns are carefully 1 checked with individual returns of tax- | payers to whom the payments are made. Many delinquent returns and additional revenue amounting to hun- dreds of thousands of dollars have been secured as the result of the examine- tion of information returns. NEW FIRM ORGANIZED.
