FINANCIAL STOCKS IRREGULAR IN PROFIT TAKING Recovery Slows Up at Short Session as Selling Appears. | BY STANLEY W. PRENOSIL, Assoclated Press Finanvic! ®ditor. NEW YORK, March 8.—The recov- ory in stock prices during the past ‘week, which has lifted the general in- dex of 90 issues to the highest level since the November break, showed signs of slowing up in today’s brief session of the market under the weight of heavy profit-taking and occasional short selling. Scores of issues were marked up 1 to 6 points in today’s early trad and J. I Case ran up more than 14 ints, but the gains were cut down g; and a rather long list of hsues sold 1 to 3 points below yester- day’s final quotations. Easing oredit conditions and expec- tations of an early recovery in general ‘business, expressed by President Hoo- wer after yesterday’s cabinet meeting, provided the background for the ad- ‘vance. ‘Weekly mercantile reviews continued to stress irregularity in the ‘business and trade situation. Business Reports. The day's business reports contained & larger proportion of unfavorable fac- tors. Directors of the Coca-Cola Inter- national Corporation increased the annual dividends from $8 to $12, but ‘Grigsby Grunow directors omitteed the usual 50 cents quarterly payment due at this time. The Timken Roller Bear- ing Co. showed slightly larger earnings for 1929 than the year before, but the ‘Barnet Leather and Homestake Mining Companies made unfavorable compari- sons with the previous year. Peoples’ Gas ran up 6 points to 178%, Eastman Kodak 5% to 224 International Cement 4 to 66%, Gen: eral Refractories 3%, to 79, Interna- tional Business Mlchmu 3 to 188, Pa- tific Gas & Electric 3 to 69, Pierce Oil ferred 3 to 3¢ and Vanadium Steel to 78, all new tops for the yur.dhut Dot all of the gains were maintained. * Merger rumors stimulated the de- imand for some of the independent steel phares, Bethlehem crossing 105 to & new high, while Gulf States and Mich- igan Steels advanced than ‘more points each. ATLANTA, March 8.—Trade statistics compiled by the Atlanta Federal Re- serve Bank for January and based upon reports from department stores and wholesale firms located v.hrou‘hout the sixth district indicate that both retail and wholesale trade declined to the low- est level for January of any year since 1922. Sales at retail by 42 department stores declined seasonally from the high level il December, and averaged 13 per cent less than in January last year. The volume of wholesale trade declined only slightly compared with December, and was 5.7 per cent less than in January, 1929. Commercial failures in the district, however, were fewer in number and liabilities were smaller than for Decem- ber, or for January last year. A smaller ;dnnmnnd for credit in the &lzmct February 12, compared with figures five weeks earlier, and a year ago, and in a substantial reduction in the borrow- ings of these banks from the Federal Reserve Bank. Discounts for all mem- ber banks in the district on February 12 were also smaller than on January 8, and were less than half as large as on the corresponding report date a year ago. Savings Deposits Larger. Savi deposits reported by 74 banks in the district averaged somewhat larger at the end of January than a month earlier, because of a substantial increase during January reported from Nash- ville. Debits to individual accounts at 26 reporting cities increased 1.5 per cent in January over December, but were 8.2 per cent smaller than in Jan- uary, 1929, Building permits issued at 20 regu- larly reporting cities of the district in- creased 26 per cent in January over ber, but averaged approximately half as large as in January last yea: Contract awards in the district as whole also increased substantially over December, but were 16.6 per cent less than in January a year ‘Consumption of cotton ln the cotton- growing States increased 27.6 per cent In January over December, but was 11 per cent less than in January a year ago, and output o! cloth and yarn by reporting milis in this district also was smaller than in January last year. Out- put of bituminuos coal in Alabama and Tennessee averaged somewhat larger in January this year than and pro- gucunn of pig iron in w?:l:b.r.lh.: showed lecreases, compared preced- ing month and the same month a year ago. Reserve Bank Operations. After declining on the last d 1920 to the lowest level since Apnl o( 1928, discounts for member banks by the Federal Reserve Bank of Av.l.mu increased somewhat the first week in January, but have decreased more than 10 millions of dollars in flle five-week to Prohibit the Sale of Securities. @pecial Distpatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 8 (#).—Cotton was extremely nervous and unsettled again today, with prices making an- other set of new low records lnr the season under a continuation of the re- cent selling to 14.08, or 28 points net lower, that became active enough to make mur.h impression on the market.
